NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Riding a five-game winning streak, the 20th-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will return home on Friday at 6 p.m. when CNU hosts Elizabethtown in a non-conference showdown at Captains Turf Field.
Entering the contest, Christopher Newport currently sits at 5-0 on the season, including 3-0 at home. Dating back to April 19, 2016, the Captains have won 13 straight home games, which ranks as the third-longest active streak in the NCAA. Meanwhile, Elizabethtown enters the contest with a pristine 3-0 mark and a 1-0 record on the road.
For fans unable to attend Friday's action, live stats will be available at CNUsports.com. The Captains will also provide a broadcast of the game with Andy McGregor and Jake Myers on the call. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.
Christopher Newport was last in action on March 3 when the squad opened up league play with a 20-7 victory over Southern Virginia. Making quick work of the Knights, the squad scored the opening goal just four seconds into regulation. That marked the second-fastest opening goal in NCAA history. Eventually, CNU stormed out to an 8-0 lead early in the second stanza before rolling to the lopsided win.
During the game,
Matthew Crist equaled the single-game program record with nine points, including six goals. For that effort, he was honored as the CAC Offensive Player of the Week and earned a spot on the USILA National Team of the Week.
Jackson Deal also handed out five assists during the game, while
Shane McKenna and
Dylan Rice contributed four points apiece.
So far this season, Rice ranks fourth in the CAC with 16 goals and fifth with 23 points. Crist and Deal are also tied for sixth in the league with nine assists. Meanwhile,
Tony Cruz leads the conference with a .657 faceoff percentage after winning 71 of his 108 battles. He also sits second in the league with 37 ground balls, while
Max Wayne is ninth with nine caused turnovers.
Coming off the program's first-ever Landmark Conference Championship last season, Elizabethtown has remained hot in 2018. The Blue Jays have been buoyed by a devastating defensive unit, which is surrendering just 4.67 goals per game. That ranks as the 14th-best mark in the NCAA. Jeremy Klipple has headlined that effort as the junior is averaging 3.00 caused turnovers per contest, which stands 27th in the country. He is the reigning Landmark Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Along with Klipple, Jack Myers has manned the crease while compiling a 4.36 goals-against-average and a .606 save percentage. Meanwhile, on the offensive side, Mike Scrafano has a team-high seven goals. He also boasts a .636 shooting percentage, which places him 19th in the country. Mike DiGenova and Brandon Sankey have seven points apiece as well, while Kyle Pienik sports a .537 faceoff percentage.
Friday's contest will mark the first-ever meeting between Christopher Newport and Elizabethtown.
Following their match-up with the Blue Jays, the Captains will remain at home for a battle against Illinois Wesleyan on March 14.
