NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport continued its winning ways Wednesday with two non-conference victories over DePauw University at Captains Park. CNU captured the opener, 3-2, and then posted an 8-0 win over the Tigers in the nightcap.
Keith Parr's squad, ranked seventh in the weekly national poll released earlier in the day Wednesday, has now won six straight games and improved to 15-3 on the season with the pair of triumphs on a sunny and mild day at Captains Park.
Sophomore
Aubrey Bates pitched six-and-a-third innings of no-hit ball in the opener, and then held on for the 3-2 victory. Bates improved to 7-0 on the season by going the distance and allowing two runs and just two hits. The Captains scored twice in the third inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman
Patty Maye Ohanian and an RBI double from fellow freshman
Emerald Cheesbrew. CNU scored what proved to be the winning run in the fifth inning, an unearned run thanks to an errant throw. Sophomore
Liz Andrews had two hits for the Captains in game one, a single and a double as CNU tallied seven hits in all.
In the nightcap, Ohanian excelled in the pitching circle and at the plate. She earned her second victory of the year, and also smacked a walk-off home run to provide the 8-0 final verdict. The game ended on the long ball in the bottom of the fifth inning due to the eight-run mercy rule.
CNU jumped to an early lead in game two with four runs in the first inning. Three came on a home run from Cheesbrew, her team-leading sixth of the season. Sophomore catcher
Calah Savage swatted a solo home run to get the fifth frame started for the Captains, and Ohanian's two-run shot sent Captains fans home happy. Ohanian pitched all five innings for CNU, yielding no runs on just three hits to improve to 2-0 on the year. Ohanian, Savage, and senior
Rachael Payne all had two hits in game two for CNU.
The Tigers of DePauw have now dropped 11 straight games and fell to 4-14 overall. CNU holds a 5-2 lead in the all-time series with DePauw, which is located in Greencastle, Indiana.
Christopher Newport concludes the month of March by opening Capital Athletic Conference play on Saturday, hosting the Wolverines of Wesley College. The CAC twin bill is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. at Captains Park.
