7th-Ranked Captains Open Conference Schedule with Doubleheader Sweep over Wesley College

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport ran its winning streak to eight games Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep over Wesley College at Captains Park. CNU won the opener, 10-1, and then took the nightcap, 9-0. Both games were halted after five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule. The victories, on a sunny and cool final day of March, opened Capital Athletic Conference play for Keith Parr's squad, as the Captains improved to 17-3 overall and 2-0 in the CAC.

CNU scored 19 runs on 21 hits for the day, with ten extra base hits including two home runs, five doubles and three triples. Sophomore Tara Deck, who drove in four runs in the first game with a two-run single and a two-run double, smacked a solo home run in the second inning of game two to finish the day with five runs batted in. Fellow sophomore Grace Wild knocked a game-concluding, two-run home run in the fifth inning of the second game to push the final verdict to 9-0.

Christopher Newport pitching allowed just one run on three hits for the day. Freshman Emily Weatherholtz and sophomore Laura Kate Moss were called on to start the games against the Wolverines. Weatherholtz improved to 5-0 with the victory in game one, yielding just one unearned run and one hit in three innings of work. Sophomore Aubrey Bates threw the final two innings of the opener, allowing no hits and striking out four. Moss evened her mark at 3-3 with the triumph in game two, pitching five innings of one-hit ball while allowing no runs.

CNU has now won all ten games in the all-time series with Wesley, and the Wolverines dropped to 10-8-1 overall and 0-2 in the CAC. Christopher Newport will continue conference play on Wednesday at Captains Park, with CNU hosting the Sea Gulls of Salisbury for a twin bill beginning at 2:30 p.m.
