NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport improved to 13-3 with two victories Saturday over Meredith College at Captains Park. CNU captured the opener, 17-4 in five innings, and then posted an 8-0 triumph in six innings in the nightcap. Both games came to early conclusions due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Keith Parr's squad, ranked eighth in the country this week, erupted for 25 runs on 26 hits in the twin bill on a sunny and chilly afternoon. The Captains recorded four home runs, including back-to-back shots in a ten-run third inning in the opener.
Senior
Leah Andrews and sophomore
Grace Wild both blasted three-run shots in the first game, and both knocked in four runs in the victory. Wild and fellow sophomore
Tara Deck hit consecutive home runs in a third inning that saw the Captains bring 13 batters to the plate, scoring ten times on seven hits.
Freshman
Patty Maye Ohanian ended the second game with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the sixth inning providing the 8-0 final tally. The walk-off was her fourth hit in four trips to the plate in the game, and her fifth hit of the doubleheader. Ohanian was five-for-seven for the day with four runs scored and four runs batted in, while Wild drove in six with three hits and Andrews brought home five runs with four hits in the doubleheader.
Sophomore
Aubrey Bates and freshman
Emily Weatherholtz started for the Captains in the pitching circle, and both kept their records unblemished. Weatherholtz improved to 4-0 after winning the opener, throwing the first four innings and allowing four runs. Bates, now 6-0, threw six scoreless frames in the second game and struck out eight Meredith batters.
Meredith fell to 15-12 with the two defeats, and the Captains now hold a 24-3 lead over the Avenging Angels in the all-time series.
CNU's scheduled doubleheader Sunday at William Peace has been postponed due to poor weather forecasts. The games have not yet been re-scheduled. CNU will play next on Wednesday at Captains Park, hosting DePauw in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
