NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport continues its non-conference schedule on Saturday, as the Captains host the Avenging Angels of Meredith College. The opening game of the doubleheader at Captains Park is set to start at 1:00 p.m.

Keith Parr's Captains, ranked eighth this week in the national poll from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, haven't seen action since last Sunday when they swept a twin bill at Roanoke College. CNU is 11-3 overall, and 4-2 at home so far this season. 

The Captains have been led at the plate so far this season by freshman catcher Emerald Cheesbrew, who is hitting .483 with five home runs in 29 at bats. Another freshman, designated hitter Patty Maye Ohanian, is next in line with a .432 average and a team-high 19 runs batted in. Ohanian also is tied for the team lead in hits (19) with senior centerfielder Leah Andrews through the first 14 games played. 

In the pitching circle, sophomore Aubrey Bates is 5-0 in six starts and freshman Emily Weatherholtz is 3-0 with a team-low 1.12 earned run average.

Meredith College enters play on Saturday with a 15-10 overall record and an 8-4 mark in the USA South Athletic Conference. The Avenging Angels are coming off two victories on Thursday at William Peace. CNU and Meredith have played 25 times over the years, and the Captains hold a 22-3 lead in the all-time series.
