BUENA VISTA, Va. --
Riding a four-game winning streak, the 20th-ranked Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will open up Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday at 4 p.m. when the Captains take on Southern Virginia at the SVU Fields.

Entering the weekend, CNU currently sits at 4-0 overall, including 1-0 away from Newport News. Meanwhile, Southern Virginia is an equally pristine 4-0 with a 1-0 mark at home.

For those fans unable to attend the game, Southern Virginia will provide live stats and a video stream of the action at Athletics.SVU.edu. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.

Christopher Newport is coming off of a 13-9 victory over Hampden-Sydney last Saturday. During that tilt, Dylan Rice came through with seven points, including a career-high four assists. Drew Magnusson also struck twice, while Tony Cruz controlled possession by winning 17 of the game's 26 faceoffs. The senior standout also collected eight ground balls against the Tigers.

So far this year, Cruz has won 66 percent of his faceoffs after claiming 57 of his 87 battles. His 582 career faceoff victories not only stand as a program record but also place him fourth among active players at any level of the NCAA. Meanwhile, Rice leads the squad with 19 points and 13 goals, while his six assists are also tied with Matthew Crist for the team-lead.

On the other side of the field, Southern Virginia is spotless in non-conference action, including an 18-13 triumph over Baldwin Wallace on Tuesday. During that battle, Seth Garff posted seven points, including five goals, while Carter Bean added a hat-trick as well. Jace Thomas also excelled at the 'X' as the freshman won 27 of the 34 faceoffs while contributing 19 ground balls and two goals.

Overall this season, Thomas leads the CAC and ranks 18th nationally with a .738 faceoff percentage. He is also averaging 12.75 ground balls per game, which places him sixth in the NCAA. Meanwhile, Shawn Lamb has a team-high 23 points and 14 assists, while Garff has struck 16 times. On the defensive side, Bostin Preisler has a .447 save percentage and a 13.87 goals-against-average.

Saturday's meeting marks the seventh all-time match-up between Southern Virginia and CNU. The Captains are 6-0 in the series and won both games last year, including a 14-8 triumph in the first round of the CAC Tournament.

Following this weekend's action, Christopher Newport will return home for a 6 p.m. showdown with Elizabethtown on March 9.
