FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Christopher Newport field hockey team moved up to 10th in the latest NFHCA National Coaches Poll ahead of the squad's top-10 showdown with No. 2 Messiah, which will take place on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Mary Washington's Battleground Turf Field.

The Captains moved up one spot in the national rankings after improving to 8-1 while extending their winning streak to four straight games. Meanwhile, Messiah held steady at No. 2 and currently sits at 11-0 on the season.

Entering the nationally-ranked showdown, Christopher Newport has blanked three of its last four opponents, including a 3-0 victory against Centre on Sunday. Overall this season, the Captains currently rank third in the nation with an .889 save percentage and seventh with a 0.54 goals-against-average. The team's six total shutouts are also the eighth-most by any program in the country.

Pacing the team during its recent run,
Olivia Davis has been named the CAC Defensive Player of the Week during each of the past two weeks. She has stopped the last 18 consecutive on-target shots and became the first CNU goalie since 2016 to register back-to-back 70-minute shutouts. Overall, she ranks fourth in the NCAA with an .878 save percentage.

On the offensive side,
Rachael Allshouse has eight points in the last four games, including a two-goal outburst against Centre on Sunday.
Ariana Samuel also has three goals and an assist in the last five contests, while
Courtney Fiest has at least one point in seven of her nine appearances this season. Her 21 total points rank second in the CAC, while
Jackie Kotoriy is first with seven assists.

On the other side of the field, Messiah has been one of the nation's top programs over the last four years. The Falcons have won 55 consecutive regular season games against Division III opponents dating back to September 23, 2015. Their only setbacks during that run came in the 2017 National Championship, the 2015 Elite Eight, and a pair of clashes against Division II power Shippensburg.

So far this season, Messiah ranks 16th in the NCAA with a 0.82 goals-against-average. The squad has shut out four opponents, including a 4-0 blanking against Albright on Saturday. On an individual level, Shelby Landes ranks eighth in the NCAA with a 0.59 goals-against-average. Meanwhile, Megan Wetzel has been the team's top offensive threat with 18 points, including seven goals. Kezia Loht also has five strikes and five assists.

Wednesday's match-up will mark the first-ever meeting between Messiah and Christopher Newport.
