CNU Cross Country Battles for Conference Supremacy on Saturday at CAC Championships

BUENA VISTA, Va. -- The Christopher Newport cross country teams will battle for conference supremacy on Saturday when the Captains take part in the Capital Athletic Conference Championships at the Vista Links Golf Course in Buena Vista, Virginia.

Action gets underway with the men's 8k beginning at 11 a.m. The women will head out on the course for the 6k at noon.

The men are looking to capture their fourth consecutive conference championship, while the women are looking for their fourth title since joining the league in 2013. The men will battle a pair of program's slotted in the latest USTFCCCA Regional rankings as York (Pa.) sits seventh in the Mideast, while Mary Washington is seventh in the South / Southeast. Meanwhile, on the women's side, York (Pa.) is fifth in their region, while Mary Washington is sixth.

The Captains also enter the championships ranked among the top programs in the South. The men are sixth in the region, while the women sit 10th.

Christopher Newport boasts four athletes looking to repeat as All-Conference performers at this year's meet. Monica Lannen was a first-team selection for her work at the 2017 Championships, while Cavanaugh McGaw, Peyton Artz, and Jason Putnam were all celebrated on the men's side last season. Equally decorated this year, Lannen and Logan Funk were both honored as CAC Women's Cross Country Athletes of the Week for their efforts in 2018.

Prior to the season, the men were picked as the favorites in the CAC, while the women were slotted second in the conference poll. Since then, Christopher Newport has gone on to win the Mary Washington Opener and CNU Invitational on the men's side, while the women claimed the title at UMW as well. Both teams also notched top-30 efforts during the prestigious Wisconsin-Oshkosh Kollege Town Sports Invitational on October 13, which served as a preview of the national championships and featured a total of 34 nationally-ranked programs.

Following Saturday's meet, the Captains will continue championship action with an appearance at the NCAA South / Southeast Regionals on November 10.
