Christopher Newport is coming off of a thrilling 2-1 victory over Mary Washington on Sunday. Battling to a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes, the two teams engaged in a shootout. Eventually,
Courtney Fiest and
Rachael Allshouse both converted their attempts for CNU, while
Olivia Davis brushed aside all four of UMW's tries to secure the victory.
Â
For her work against the Eagles, Davis was honored as the CAC Defensive Player of the Week. The junior goalkeeper currently leads the Capital Athletic Conference with a 0.75 goals-against-average and an .828 save percentage. She has also teamed up with
Mary Grace Humes and a stellar defensive unit to register four shutouts in the squad's first seven games.
Â
On the offensive side, Fiest ranks second in the Capital with eight goals and 18 points, while
Jackie Kotoriy is first in the league with seven assists. She also stands third in the nation with a 1.00 assists-per-game average. Meanwhile, along with Fiest, Humes, and Kotoriy, the squad has also received significant contributions from the three other members of its sophomore class.
Ariana Samuel is tied for second on the team with three goals, while
Lily Bryngelson and
Angelica Florendo have also appeared in all seven games this season.
Â
Lynchburg enters Wednesday following a 3-2 setback at York (Pa.) on Saturday. Despite the loss, the Hornets currently rank 15th in the NCAA with a 4.00 goals-per-game average. The squad's attack has scored in every game this year and has two or more strikes in six of the team's eight contests. Boasting a well-balanced offensive unit, nine different players have already scored a goal, while Nikki Simpao boasts a team-high nine strikes. The reigning All-American also has three assists and 21 total points.
Â
Meanwhile, on the defensive side, Laurel Nicks has compiled a .778 save percentage and a 1.88 goals-against-average. She also helped the Hornets open the year with three consecutive shutouts. Hayden Shockley has been a standout on the back line as well with three defensive saves. That total ranks fourth in the ODAC this year.
Â
Wednesday's contest will mark the 17th all-time meeting between Christopher Newport and Lynchburg. Both programs have won eight of the previous match-ups. The Hornets won the previous battle, 3-2, in 2015. Simpao scored the game-winning goal for Lynchburg in that contest.
