BUENA VISTA, Va. -- Both Christopher Newport basketball teams will look to bounce back in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday, January 10 as they travel to Southern Virginia University for a mid-week league doubleheader at Knight Sports Arena. The women's teams will tip off first, at 5:30 pm, followed immediately by the men's matchup set for 7:30 pm.
The Captains were on the wrong end of a doubleheader sweep at Marymount University on Saturday, and will look to get back in the win column against the Knights. The road contest is the second game in a difficult January slate that includes three straight and seven of nine games away from the Freeman Center. In the first game of the double dip, the nationally-ranked CNU women's team will take on the laegue's leading offense as Southern Virginia comes into the game averaging over 75 points per game, which ranks in the top 25 nationally. CNU (11-2, 5-1) fell into a three-way tie for second place in the league standings and will be taking on a Knights team also looking to bounce back after a pair of losses, coming into the game with an 8-4 record overall, 2-4 in league play.
The Captains are now ranked No. 11 in the nation according to the WBCA Coaches Poll, and have slipped to No. 13 in the D3hoops.com Top 25. CNU is one of the nation's elite defensive teams, forcing over 32 turnovers per game while ranking third nationally in steals per game. Senior
Bailey Dufrene is at the top of a balanced scoring attack, averaging 7.5 points per game. Junior
Jessica Daguilh is right behind her, with 7.3 points per contest, while also leading the team in rebounding with 5.5 boards per contest.
Southern Virginia features the league's top two leading scorers in senior Shelby Butler and newcomer Katie Garrish. The rookie is also leading the league in rebounding while averaging 15.9 points and 11.9 rebounds per game. Butler's league leading scoring output is 18.0 points per game and the frontcourt duo is balanced by junior guard Alexus Barnes, also averaging double figures with 10.9 points per game.
On the men's side, Christopher Newport (10-3, 4-2) will take on a talented Southern Virginia (7-6, 2-4) squad that has been in nearly every game this season with four of it's six losses coming by eight points or less. The matchup pits the league's top two defensive units against eachother as CNU has registered a scoring offense allowing 65.1 points per game and SVU is at 67.8.
Announced prior to the game against Marymount on Saturday, the Captains will be playing without the services of All-American guard Marcus Carter for the remainder of the season due to an injury. In six games this season, Carter was averaging 12.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. CNU will lean on the other two seniors, Aaron McFarland and Spencer Marin, who rank first and second on the team in scoring, respectively. McFarland ranks fourth in the CAC in scoring with 17.9 points per game while Marin leads the conference in field goal percentage with a .615 mark while averaging 12.4 points per game.
The Knights come into the contest led by sophomore forward Justin Prisbey, averaging 12.8 points per game. The front court for Southern Virginia has shown some depth, with seniors Aaron Rumbaugh (12.4 ppg), Cale Thornton (10.0 ppg), and rookie Jaron Anderson (8.3 ppg) leading the team in scoring.
Following the action in Buena Vista, the Captains will finish a three-game road trip this Saturday, January 13 at York College of Pennsylvania. That doubleheader is scheduled to tip off at 1:00 pm.
