CNU Basketball Travels to York Saturday for Key Capital Athletic Conference Battles

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport and York tangle Saturday in men's and women's basketball at Charles Wolf Gymnasium in York, Pennsylvania. The Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader begins at 1:00 p.m. with the women's contest followed by the men's game at approximately 3:00 p.m. The twin bill will weigh heavily on the CAC standings, as the Captains and Spartans are enjoying successful seasons.

The men's game will feature the undefeated and eighth-ranked York College squad that is 14-0 overall and 7-0 atop the league standings. The Spartans are coming off an 88-78 victory Wednesday night at home over Penn State-Harrisburg, and are led by senior big men Dalton Myers and Blayde Reich, who are both averaging 19 points per game. The Spartans are a high-scoring, senior-laden squad and are averaging 87 points per game. Matt Hunter's team is also shooting 47 percent from the field for the year.

The Captains are 11-3 and 5-2, and recorded a dominant 83-58 victory at Southern Virginia on Wednesday. John Krikorian's squad was paced by a 19-point outburst from senior Aaron McFarland, who tallied 11 straight points in the opening half against the Knights. McFarland, who has now scored 1,285 career points, is currently 15th on CNU's all-time scoring list and is just 19 points behind his injured teammate Marcus Carter.

The men's game will be the 11th all-time in the series, and the Captains hold a 9-1 edge and have won the last nine.

In the opening game of the doubleheader, CNU and York will battle for position in the CAC standings as both squads are 6-1 so far in the CAC. Bill Broderick's Christopher Newport squad is 12-2 overall following a decisive 92-57 triumph at Southern Virginia on Wednesday. The Captains continue to be ranked in the top five nationally in both steals and turnovers forced and 14 CNU players have ten or more steals already this year.

Junior Jessica Daguilh is coming off a 12-point and ten rebound performance on Wednesday, and now is averaging 7.7 points per game. It marked her second double-double fo the season.

The York women's squad is 10-4 overall to go with its 6-1 conference mark. Betsy Whitman's team is tied with CNU one game behind league-leading Marymount enter Saturday's action. The Spartans, who defeated Penn State-Harrisburg on Wednesday, 81-65, are led by senior Katie Wagner (13.9 points per game) and junior Katie McGowan (13.3 points per game).

The women's matchup will be the 15th all-time, and the Captains hold a 9-5 edge in the series.
