FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The 2017 ITA Southeast Regional Championships are set to to be played this weekend on the campus of Mary Washington. Christopher Newport is one of 29 programs attending the event, with bids to the ITA Small College National Championships on the line.
The draws were announced Friday evening and released on the tournament website linked at the top of this page. Final results will also be entered into that site for each of the event draws.
Headlining the Christopher Newport entrants are top-seeded doubles tandem
Justin Cerny and
David Reed. The Captains' senior duo earned a first-round bye and will play their first match at 9:15 am on Saturday morning with a bid to the Round of 16 on the line. They will play either Carnegie Mellon's Tommy Cheng/Kailas Shekar or Shenandoah's Brett Dubin/Matthew Hwang, who go head-to-head at 8:00 am. CNU also features the ninth-seeded tandem in
Jackson Guilford and
Nicholas Ruzicka, who will play at 9:30 as well.
Also playing in the championship doubles draw will be
Dominic Lacombe and
William Trang, facing the Mary Washington tandem of Joseph Brown and Cole Tecce at 8:00 am. Finally,
James Baron and
Andy Mason will take on Wilkes duo Tawhid Choudhury and Courtney Murphy at 8:45 am for the right to face fifth-seeded Mark Fallati/Joshua Powell in the Round of 32.
CNU only has one more doubles pairing in the action, as
Bryce Coleman and
Alex Johnson will take the court at 8:45 in the Blue 1 doubles flight. They will take on Bridgewater's Nathaniel Horner and Freddie Roberts in the opening round.
Like in doubles, CNU also features a pair of seeded singles players in the championship draw. Reed, at No. 5, and Cerny, at No. 9 will highlight the Captains' individual play starting at 11:00 am when Reed takes on Jake Sandler from Washington College. Cerny won't see his first action in singles until 1:30 pm when he takes on Bridgewater's Joshua Rodgers.
The Captains have entered six players into the championship draw, as Guilford, Lacombe, Ruzicka, and Mason will join the seniors in singles play. Trang will play in the Blue 1 flight, taking on Yosuke Higashi from Swarthmore at 11:15, and
Mitch Brody will play in the Blue 2 flight, leading off against Robert Kresch from Haverford at 12:30 pm.
