ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Making his debut for the Christopher Newport men's tennis team, sophomore transfer
Jackson Guilford had a stellar opening day to lead the way at the Joe Hunt Invitational on Friday afternoon. Guilford picked up wins over Division I opponents in both singles and doubles on the first day, highlighting a performance that included several wins for the Captains.
Guilford was playing in the "Orange" flight for singles and picked up a three-set victory over Francisco Bohorquez from Temple University in the opening round. He earned the win 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 and advanced to take on Georgetown's Josh Marchalik on Saturday for a chance to reach the draw's semifinals.
Sophomore
Dominic Lacombe also earned a win for CNU in singles action while playing in the "Purple" flight. Against Temple's Mark Wallner, Lacombe pulled out a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory and will take on Georgetown's Luke Ross on Saturday. Senior
Justin Cerny managed a hard-fought win in his first set against Temple's Juan Araoz, but fell in three by a final score of 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles action, Guilford paired with
Nicholas Ruzicka in the "Red" flight for doubles, capturing a win over Monmouth University's pairing of Martinez and Wharton. The CNU duo won, 6-2, and took on Johns Hopkins Gu and Kim in the second round before falling into the fifth-place consolation bracket.
Rookies
James Baron and
Mitch Brody picked up the final win of the day for CNU as the tandem suffered a first-round loss, but bounced back to take down St. Bonaventure's McGuirt and Cross for a 6-2 win.
The Captains will return to action on Saturday for the second of a three-day tournament.
