CNU Women's Tennis Opens 2017-18 Season at the ITA Southeast Regional Championship

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team will open the fall portion of the schedule this weekend at the 2017 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional Women's Tennis Championships. Played at the University of Mary Washington, CNU will take on a field that includes 24 teams from around the region with bids to the Small College National Championships on the line. 

Draws were announced for the tournament on Thursday night, with six Captains participating in the Championship Singles Draw starting on Saturday at 11:00 am. Doubles action will kick off first, with three CNU tandems appearing in the Championship Doubles Draw starting at 8:00 am. 

CNU features top-seeded senior pairing Alexandra Drye and McKinney Harwood in the Championship Doubles Draw, taking the court first against Franklin & Marshall's Gavriel Rubenstein and Jingzi Wu. CNU also has a second seeded duo, as senior Kate Huck and sophomore Johanna Ranta-aho are picked as the No. 5 seed, taking on Mary Washington's Sara Fioretti and Hannah Jabusch in the first round. 

The doubles bracket will see pairings play twice on Saturday, with the quarterfinals and semifinals set to be played on Sunday. The championship match will then take place at 3:00 pm on Monday, September 25. 

In the Championship Singles Draw, Ranta-aho headlines the sextet of CNU Captains appearing int he 64-player bracket. In her first career ITA Regional Championships appearance last year, Ranta-aho advanced deeper than any Captain before, reaching the semifinals of the top draw. This year, she is seeded No. 4 heading into the event, and is scheduled to take on Washington & Lee's Hannah Archer at 1:00 pm. 

Also appearing in the championship draw is junior Lily Schreiber and seniors Alexandra Drye, Meili Konell, Isabelle Wessel, and Kate Huck. Winners in the first round will play a second match immediately following on Saturday, with the Round of 16 and quarterfinals being played on Sunday. The semifinals and championship match are scheduled for Monday at 9:00 am.
