Josh Freeman Named Assistant Softball Coach

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Christopher Newport University Director of Athletics Kyle McMullin and Head Softball Coach Keith Parr today announced the hiring of Josh Freeman as Assistant Softball Coach.

"We're so excited to have Josh on board to help lead our program," Parr said. "He will bring excitement and great energy every day while passing along his passion and knowledge of the game."

A native of Charlotte, N.C., Freeman comes to CNU following a memorable year on the staff at Virginia Wesleyan University in Virginia Beach. The Marlins won the Division III National Championship this spring.

Freeman graduated from East Carolina University in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science in communications.

Prior to his jump to collegiate coaching, Freeman spent multiple seasons in the high school and travel ball circuits. He served as the manager of the Hampton Roads Vipers fastpitch softball club from 2009 to 2016, leading the Vipers to the ASA Eastern Nationals Championship while also qualifying for multiple nationally recognized tournaments.

Freeman was also the head coach at Green Run High School in 2015 and 2016 after serving as the JV head coach there for two seasons. His squads at Green Run advanced to the VHSL Conference Playoffs. From 2006-09, he served as head coach of the Bayside Middle School baseball team.

Keith Parr's Captains won the Capital Athletic Conference's regular and post-season championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 11th straight season this spring. Christopher Newport finished with a record of 34-10, also marking the 11th straight season CNU has topped the 30-win plateau.
