NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team suffered it's first loss in six matches as the 15th-ranked Mary Washington Eagles (10-3, 2-0) snapped the Captains' winning streak with a 7-2 win on a sun-splashed Saturday afternoon. The Captains fall to 7-4 on the season, 1-1 in the CAC, after a highly-competitve bout with the Eagles.

Doubles action couldn't have been tighter as the two teams teetered back and forth in tandem play. In the top flight, juniors Alexandra Drye and McKinney Harwood grabbed a thrilling win over Mary Washington's top pairing of Kait Brogan and Taylor Diffley. The Eagles'  top pairing had started the spring season with an 11-1 record coming into Saturday's matchup, but the Captains veteran duo won 8-6,  handing them their second loss of the season to get CNU on the board first, 1-0.

The other two doubles matchups were equally as competitive, but Mary Washington would come out on top to carry a 2-1 lead into singles play. In No. 2 doubles, Kate Huck and Johanna Ranta-aho suffered an 8-6 loss to Ashley Brarow and Rachel Summers. In the No. 3 bout, CNU senior Katie Carlson and junior Emily Morgan paired to force a tiebreaker, but Mary Washington's Caroline Mosberg and Danielle Mirabella escaped with a 9-8 (7-1) win.

In singles play, the Eagles won the first three matches to clinch the team victory. Brogan secured the win for Mary Washington, defeating Harwood in the No. 1 slot.

CNU would not be denied another team point, though, as rookie Johanna Ranta-aho added to her exceptional first year with the win at No. 2 over Diffley. The Eagles' senior came into the match tied for the team lead with a 15-5 overall record in singles play, but Ranta-aho managed a straight set victory over the veteran, 6-4, 6-3.

The Captains will look to bounce back with seven of their remaining eight regular season matches away from the home courts. CNU will head to St. Mary's (Md.) on Tuesday, March 28 for Capital Athletic Conference action in their next scheduled match.
