CNU Basketball Heads to St. Mary's (Md.) Wednesday For First CAC Road Matchup of the Season

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- The Christopher Newport basketball teams are headed out on the road for the first conference doubleheader away from the Freeman Center this season, as the Captains take on St. Mary's College of Maryland on Wednesday night. First up, the CNU men will look to bounce back against the Seahawks at 6:00 pm, followed immediately by the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's team taking on St. Mary's at 8:00 pm.

The first game of the doubleheader will feature the Captains (4-2, 1-1) against the home team Seahawks (1-5, 0-2) at 6:00 pm. The CNU men are coming off an overtime conference loss to Frostburg State on Saturday while St. Mary's (Md.) is riding a five-game losing streak after opening the year with a win at Gallaudet. The undefeated CNU women will then take the floor with a perfect 6-0, 2-0 record as they take on St. Mary's (Md.) with a 2-4 overall mark and 0-2 record in conference play.

Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for both games and the men's game will be broadcast live on the CNU / Pepsi Radio Network at Xtra 99.1 FM.

Men's Basketball: CNU at St. Mary's (Md.)
The Captains own a 13-9 advantage in the all-time series with six straight wins over the Seahawks.

This season, the Captains have been led by senior Aaron McFarland with 21.2 points per game, good for second in the league in the early portion of the schedule. McFarland is shooting 45% from long range and is adding 5.8 rebounds per game as well. Senior Spencer Marin, with 13.2 points and a team-high 7.8 rebounds per game has been a breakout option for the Captains up front.

Behind the top two scorers, CNU has also gotten impressive contributions from rookie Jason Aigner and sophomore Savonte Chappell. Both players have led the Captains in scoring in a game this season, including Chappell with a career-high 21 points against the Bobcats. Aigner, the team's third leading scorer, led the way with 15 points against Randolph-Macon in the opener.

On the other side of the floor, the Seahawks are looking to right the ship after a five-game skid has tarnished the start of the year for head coach Chris Harney's squad. Three Seahawks are averaging double figures this season as sophomore Spencer Schultz is pouring in 17.0 ppg while classmate Matt Ayoub is adding 14.0 per contest. Senior Ochae Bynum rounds out the top trio with 13.2 points per game while also leading the way with 2.5 assists per game.

Women's Basketball: No. 2/3 CNU at St. Mary's (Md.)
CNU has won 13 straight in the all-time series against the Seahawks, with a 19-3 edge in the matchup.

So far this season the Captains have been perfect, opening up with a 6-0 start and holding onto their spot near the top of the national rankings. CNU ranks 10th in the nation in scoring defense, holding opponents to 47.3 points per game, and third nationally in steals per game with 20.2. The tormenting defensive pressure forces an average of 34.83 turnovers per game, which also ranks third nationally.

Individually, senior Sam Porter became the 27th player in program history to reach 1,000 points in her career, doing so against Frostburg State on Saturday afternoon. She ranks second to Bailey Dufrene in the captains' scoring column, averaging 9.0 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Dufrene, also a senior, leads the way with 9.5 points per game.

St. Mary's opened the year with a 2-2 start before facing a grueling start to their CAC schedule with all three of last year's nationally-ranked programs back-to-back-to-back. The Seahawks opened conference play with a 68-57 setback to Mary Washington before falling to No. 23 Marymount, 65-45, on Saturday. Katie Robey and Kerri Kline are leading the team with 11.2 points per game while junior Kobe Chaney is among the league leaders in rebounding with 11.8 boards per contest.
