No. 7 CNU Women's Soccer Prepared to Host NCAA 1st & 2nd Rounds This Weekend

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The stage is set for the 2017 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship to begin for a quartet of teams in Newport News this weekend, as the 7th-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team welcomes in three teams with their eyes locked on a Sweet 16 berth. The nationally-ranked Captains will open the weekend on Saturday, November 11 at 5:00 pm against Cabrini University, followed by a neutral site contest between 20th-ranked Lynchburg College and McDaniel College at 7:30 pm. The winning teams will then advance to the second round, with kickoff slated for 7:00 pm on Sunday, November 12. 

Live stats and a live video webcast will be available for all three games this weekend, with links found at CNUsports.com/live. 

Ticket Prices
The gate at Captains FIeld will open one hour prior to kickoff. Tickets are priced at $6 for adults and $3 for children and students. CNU students will be admitted free with a valid ID, courtesy of the CNU Department of Athletics. 

About #7 Christopher Newport
The Captains are making the program's 10th appearance in hte NCAA Tournament, including four in the last five years. CNU won it's second straight Capital Athletic Conference Championship and carry a program-record 16-game winning streak into the postseason. 

One of only five teams in Division III without a loss this season, the Captains have also piled up a program-record 18 victories behind a well-rounded performance this fall. The CNU defense has allowed just 10 goals in 18 games this year, including just three allowed in the last 13 contests. Senior goalkeeper Carly Maglio has manned the box for the majority of the season, continuing to add to a spectacular career. She has capped her record-breaking tenure with the finest season on her resume, going 17-0-1 with a 0.46 goals-against average. 

On the other side of the field, the CNU offense is also one of the nation's top units, pouring in 3.68 goals per game. The scoring offense ranks 11th nationally, led by CAC Rookie of the Year Riley Cook, with 34 points, and CAC Player of the Year Gabby Gillis, with 32 points. Sophomore Carson Pokorny ranks third on the team with 24 points while posting one of the finest single season marks in program history with 12 assists. 

About Cabrini University
The Cavaliers earned the program's eighth NCAA Tournament appearance by winning the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship last week. Cabrini comes in with a 13-2-4 overall record, including an unbeaten mark over their last six games. 

Cabrini opened the season with a 2-1-3 record before winning 11 of 13 games to build momentum into Saturday's postseason matchup. Senior Taylor Tralie leads the way for the Cavs with 37 points this season, coming on 12 goals and 13 assists. Tralie has scored the most points in a single season for Cabrini since 2009 and is the only double-digit scorer for the Cavs this season. Marisa Christensen and Katelyn Glinger have each scored nine points to rank second on the team. 

Defensively Gabby LeGendre has started 16 games in net for the cabs and boasts a 1.14 goals against average. She made nine saves in the CSAC Championship game to help secure the 2-1 win over Marywood for the league title. 

About #20 Lynchburg University
Making the program's 11th straight and 18th overall NCAA Tournament appearance, the Hornets earned their trip to the 2017 dance by way of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship. Lynchburg enters Saturday with an 18-3-0 overall record. 

The Hornets captured their 15th ODAC Championship and seventh in the past eight seasons. They have also earned at least one NCAA Tournament victory in each of their past five appearances, including during the 2014 NCAA National Championship season. 

This year, the Hornets have been led by ODAC Player of the Year, Emily Maxwell, who collected her second career conference player of the year honor. She, and the rest of the Lynchburg defense, have allowed just 15 goals in 21 games this season for a goals-against average of 0.71. Junior goalkeeper Delia LoSapoio has started all 21 games boasting a 18-3-0 record with five shutouts. Offensively, a deep junior class leads the way with Caitlin Mertens (28 pts) and Kennedy Jakubek (27 pts) at the forefront. 

About McDaniel
Making just the third NCAA Tournament appearance in Green Terror history, McDaniel College is also making it's third straight. MC earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament after being eliminated by nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins in the Centennial Conference semifinals in a penalty kick shootout. The Green Terror carry an overall record of 12-5-2 into the postseason. 

Four McDaniel players earns All-Conference honors this week, led by first team defender Kristen Upton. Upton earned her third career All-CC mention after helping the defense post eight shutouts with a 1.07 goals-against average this year. 

Offensively, senior Katie Kirschenmann leads the attack with 18 points on eight goals and two assists. She started all 19 games alongside second team All-CC midfielder Abby Keen, who ranked second on the team with 12 points this year. McDaniel has been tested this season with a difficult schedule that included a win over then-#6 Swarthmore, 4-3, and the 1-1 draw against 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins.
