NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Two of the top three teams in the Capital Athletic Conference standings are set to match up on Saturday evening, as the 9th-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team plays host to Frostburg State University at 4:00 pm. The unbeaten Captains carry a 10-0-1, 3-0-1 mark into the matchup, while the Bobcats are in third place in the league standings with a 3-6-2, 2-0-1 record.
The game will be played as part of a doubleheader with the men's programs, who are tentatively scheduled to kick off at 6:00 pm. For fans who are unable to attend Captains Field for the twin bill, live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com/live.
It will serve as the first meeting between the programs since last season's league championship matchup, in which CNU captured the first CAC title in a 1-0 decision. Christopher Newport owns a 4-2-2 advantage in the all-time series against the Bobcats after that championship victory, powered to the win by a game-winning goal from
Carson Pokorny.
This year, Pokorny is a key part of one of the nation's elite offensive units as the Captains are averaging 3.82 goals per game through the first 11 games. She is one of four CNU players to have reached double figures in points already this season, ranking third on the team with 14 points on five goals and four assists. Rookie
Riley Cook has burst onto the scene and leads the CAC in scoring with 23 poitns on 10 goals and three assists, while All-Region midfielder
Gabby Gillis is second on the team with 17 points on seven goals and three assists.
Defensively, CNU has been led by senior goalkeeper
Carly Maglio, who has allowed just seven goals in 843+ minutes of action. Maglio owns a 0.75 goals against average while stopping over 80% of attempts with 29 saves. The starting back line features senior
Danielle Pratt, sophomores
Keiley McCarthy,
Shaye Doherty, and rookie
Alexi Manley.
On the other side of the pitch, Frostburg State comes in unbeaten over the last four games (2-0-2) with a 1-0 win over Mary Washington in their last contest. Brooke Shehade has accounted for a third of the Bobcats offensive production, scoring nine points on three goals and three assists. Danielle Ferris has added five points, with two goals and an assist.
Following the matchup against Frostburg State, the Captains will host St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday, October 11 at 7:00 pm.
