No. 8 CNU Women's Soccer Travels to Mary Washington for 1:00 pm Matchup Saturday

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's soccer team will face its first opportunity to clinch it's fifth straight Capital Athletic Conference regular season crown on Saturday, as the 9th-ranked Captains travel to Mary Washington for a 1:00 pm matchup.

With a win in either of it's last two games of the regular season, the nationally-ranked Captains would lock up the top seed in the CAC Tournament for the fifth straight year. The Captains, unbeaten through 15 games for the first time in program history, come into the contest with a 14-0-1 record and a perfect 7-0-0 conference mark. The 15-game unbeaten streak matches the program record set in the 2010 season.

Mary Washington enters Saturday's tilt with major playoff implications as the Eagles are currently tied for fourth in the conference with five teams battling for the final three postseason berths. The Eagles are 7-8-1 on the season with a 3-3-1 record in conference play.

For fans who can not attend the game in Fredericksburg, Va., live stats and a live video webcast will be provided by the UMW Department of Athletics.  Links to both can be found at CNUsports.com on the women's soccer schedule.

The Captains will turn to a dangerous offense and stifling defense once again on Saturday, looking to continue a dominating run against conference play. Since the first conference game of 2015, the Captains are 23-0-1 against the league with a goal disparity of 84-9 in that stretch. Senior Carly Maglio has been between the pipes for almost every one of those contests, and continues to add to her illustrious career. On Wednesday night, Maglio became the all-time leader in career shutouts at CNU, with 24, and ran her current shutout streak to four games.

Offensively, rookie Riley Cook and junior Gabby Gillis are first and second in the league in scoring with 28 and 25 points, respectively. Cook has shattered the single season rookie scoring mark at CNU with 12 goals and four assists this season. Gillis has enjoyed a breakout third season in the scoring column with 10 goals and five assists. Underclassmen Carson Pokorny (16 pts) and Maxine Borris (13 pts) are also at the top of the Captains offense, which ranks in the top 20 nationally in goals per game.

Mary Washington will counter with a young roster of their own, featuring three freshman among their four leading scorers. Rookie Brooke Bauman leads the way after having started all 16 games of her first year. Bauman has 13 points on five goals and three assists, while her classmate, Erica Ganther, is right behind with 11 points on four goals and three assists.

Following Saturday's road finale, the Captains will return to Newport News for one more game in the regular season before heading into tournament play. CNU will host Marymount University on Wednesday, October 25 at 7:00 pm to wrap up the 2017 regular season slate.
