NEWARK, N.J. -- The 11th-ranked Christopher Newport women's soccer team raced out to an early lead at Rutgers-Newark on Monday evening, and added two more goals to capture a 3-0 shutout win on the road. The Captains improved to 6-1-0 this season, while the Scarlet Raiders fall to 1-6-1 after the setback.
Christopher Newport took advantage of its first run up the field on Monday night, scoring just over three minutes into the game. The play started with rookie
Carson Pokorny crossing a beautiful ball into the middle of the field, where senior
Victoria Perry made a quick pass to
Taylor Hudgins. The sophomore midfielder was wide open and smashed a hard shot off the right post for the first goal of the game.
With the helper, Perry is now tied for the program record in career assists, with 24, and moved into a tie for second in career points with 88. She matched CNU Athletics Hall of Famer Ashleigh Dota in both categories.
With an early lead, the Captains continued to press throughout the first half, looking to extend their lead. In total, CNU took eight shots in the opening stanza, putting five on-goal. The second goal of the game would come in the 41st minute as
Allie McWilliams chipped the defense to find sophomore
Kayla Locklear racing toward the goal mouth. Locklear bodied the ball across the goal line on the left side of the frame.
CNU looked to add a third goal in the half just moments later, when
Logan Montel had a similar play to Locklear. Her ball was covered by the goalkeeper, Diana Carvalho, but appeared to cross the plane of the goal line. The officials ruled otherwise, and CNU would be forced to settle for a 2-0 lead at halftime.
A little under 20 minutes into the second half, CNU would tack on an insurance goal from the penalty spot, when
Kimmie Kerstiens converted for her third goal of the season. CNU earned the PK after a caution was issued to Rutgers-Newark defender Angelika Barris in the 65th minute.
The CNU defense continued to limit opportunities by the opposing offense, as they have all season. In tonight's game, the back line allowed just seven shots, with four on-goal. Junior goalkeeper
Carly Maglio turned away all four attempts, securing her fourth shutout of the season.
The Captains will return to Newport News for the opening of Capital Athletic Conference play this weekend, facing York College of Pennsylvania on Saturday, September 24. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 pm, with live stats and live video available at CNUsports.com/live.
