NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
The Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will host 15th-ranked Frostburg State in a crucial Capital Athletic Conference contest at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Captains Turf Field.

Entering the weekend, CNU sits at 7-2 on the year, including 1-0 in league action. Meanwhile, Frostburg State comes into the match-up with a pristine 11-0 record with a 2-0 mark in CAC play.

For those fans unable to make it to the contest, live stats will be available at CNUsports.com. Christopher Newport will also provide a live broadcast of the action with Andy McGregor and Jake Myers on the call. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.

A LOOK AT THE CAPTAINS

Christopher Newport features a well-balanced offensive attack as five players have scored at least 14 times. Will Geise leads the team with 26 points, and Dave Magdeburger sits second with 25. Matthew Crist has also been explosive recently as the sophomore standout has 13 goals in his last five outings, including a pair of four-goal outbursts.

Showing off both precision and patience, the Captains rank 12th in the NCAA with 66 assists this year. Geise has a team-high 12 helpers, while Magdeburger has 11. Both players have 35 assists in their careers, which is tied for the second-highest total in program history.

On the defensive end, Brandon Moloney leads the CAC with 23 caused turnovers and ranks fifth overall with 52 ground balls. Michael Mabry has also caused 16 turnovers this season, and Matt Hayden ranks third in the conference with a .587 save percentage. Hayden is also on the verge of history as the junior enters the weekend tied with Andy McGregor for the all-time program record with 27 career victories.

Joey Rolando also faces a unique match-up on Saturday. His younger brother, Tommy, is a freshman goalie for the Bobcats. Joey has started all nine games for the Captains and ranks sixth on the team with 17 points. Tommy has appeared in two contests for FSU, including four minutes of spotless work at Wesley on March 17.

LAST TIME OUT

On Wednesday, the Captains erased an early deficit to defeat Virginia Wesleyan, 16-9. Crist led the way with four goals, while Geise and Randy Foster added three tallies apiece. Moloney was equally terrific as he corralled 11 ground balls, which tied the single-game program record for non-faceoff specialists. Tony Cruz also won 17 of his 25 faceoffs, while Hayden added 12 saves.

SCOUTING THE BOBCATS

Frostburg State boasts one of the finest man-down units in the nation. Through 11 games, FSU opponents have scored only two goals during 24 extra-man opportunities. The Bobcats rank sixth in the nation - and first in the CAC - with a .917 kill percentage.

Overall, Frostburg State has limited its competition to 5.09 goals per game, which ranks seventh in the country. Tom Kraemer has led the way between the pipes as he ranks 24th in the NCAA with a .618 save percentage. The squad has also forced 72 turnovers during the year, including nine by Tate Rolland. Joey Lucas and Alex Philips have caused eight miscues apiece as well.

Equally adept on faceoffs, FSU ranks fourth in the NCAA with a .728 winning percentage and fifth in the country with 367 total ground balls. Erik Geiser has led the way on faceoffs as the senior has won 110 of his 144 battles. Kyle Horak has a .692 winning percentage during his 78 attempts as well.

On the offensive end, Chase Cullison has a team-high 20 goals, while Spenser Love leads the team with 33 points and 14 assists. Overall, seven different Bobcats have scored at least 10 times this season.

SERIES HISTORY

CNU and Frostburg State have battled three times with the Bobcats winning all three match-ups. Last year, FSU registered a 14-8 triumph in Maryland. Hayden made 10 saves during that contest, while Rolando and Geise both notched goals. Meanwhile, Rolland added a game-high eight points for the Bobcats.

UP NEXT

Following Saturday's contest, Christopher Newport will remain at home for a 7 p.m. game against Mary Washington on March 30.
