NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team hosted a pair of Capital Athletic Conference matches on Saturday, improving to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play with a pair of shutout victories. The Captains dropped Frostburg State, 5-0, before taking down Southern Virginia, 9-0.

The match against Frostburg State was shortened due to weather and court space as the Captains moved the two matches indoors to the Centre Court Racquet Club.

The doubleheader gave Director of tennis Eric Christiansen a chance to shuffle his lineup on Saturday, as ten different CNU players registered at least one victory in the two matches. That group included the first career appearance, and victory, for rookie Colette Gilbert, who captured a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles against Southern Virginia. Sophomore Kristi Wong also earned her first win of the year, playing at No. 5 against the Knights.

CNU's domination of doubles play this season continued on Saturday, going 6-0 between the two matchups, while dropping just two games. Sophomores Alexandra Drye and Emily Morgan improved to 10-0 at No. 2 doubles, while McKinney Harwood and Katie Carlson added their seventh and eighth wins at No. 1 doubles. As a team, the Captains have gone 27-6 in doubles play this year, for a winning percentage of 81.8%.

In singles, sophomore Meili Konell made her first career appearance at No. 1, dropping Frostburg State's Kayla Kirk by a final score of 6-0, 6-1. Rookie Lily Schreiber played at No. 4 singles against Southern Virginia, improving to 2-0 in her collegiate career.

The Captains won all six singles matches against Southern Virginia by 6-0, 6-0 scores.

CNU will host St. Mary's (Md.) on Sunday, March 20. The match was originally scheduled to be a road contest, but due to weather concerns, CNU will host the Seahawks at 1:00 pm.
