CNU Women's Tennis Holds at No. 33 in the Nation; Hosts CAC Action Saturday

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The CNU Women's Tennis team held their spot in the most recent release of the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Women's Tennis National Rankings, listed at No. 33 in the country. The Captains are off to an impressive start this spring with a 7-2 overall record with two wins over nationally-ranked programs, and will host a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday, March 19.

The Captains will welcome in Frostburg State at Noon on Saturday, followed by another conference tilt against Southern Virginia at 3:00 pm. All the action will be held at the Eyre Courts on campus, weather permitting.

Christopher Newport, under the direction of Eric Christiansen, continues to impress national voters in 2016 with an impressive resume that includes six wins over regionally-ranked opponents. The lone loss to a Division III team this year came to 21st-ranked Redlands in a highly-competitive matchup between two talented programs, decided by just one point, 5-4.

The CNU women's tennis team has been particularly impressive in doubles action, winning 77.8% of their dual matches in tandem play, including a perfect 8-0 record at No. 2 against Division III opponents. Sophomores Alexandra Drye and Emily Morgan have led the way with that 8-0 mark, while junior Katie Carlson and sophomore McKinney Harwood have combined to go 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.

Christiansen has used a variety of different starting lineups in singles play, with five different players registering victories at multiple slots. In positions 4-6, the Captains have posted a 22-5 overall record this spring, including a perfect 7-0 record from sophomore Claire Dockrill between 4 & 5.

The Captains will face the Bobcats (1-5, 0-1) and Knights (1-3, 0-1), looking to improve on their 1-0 start in conference play. Full scores and a recap will be available at CNUsports.com following the action.
