NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The 37th-ranked CNU women's tennis team wraps up it's six-match homestand to start the 2016 season this weekend, welcoming in Franklin & Marshall College (0-0) and Division I Norfolk State (0-3). The Captains (4-0) will first face regionally-ranked F&M on Saturday, February 20 at Noon, followed by an 11:00 am start against the Spartans on Sunday, February 21.
The Captains have impressed in their first four duals, especially in doubles play. With perfect 4-0 records at No. 1 and 2, Christopher Newport has surged out to an 11-1 start in pairs play. In singles action, CNU has dropped just three matches for a 21-3 overall record and a winning percentage over 87%.
Three CNU sophomoress have earned a perfect 4-0 record in singles play so far this season:
Claire Dockrill,
Meili Konell and
Isabelle Wessel. Konell has one win at No. 2 and three at No. 4, while Dockrill and Wessel have also combined to go 2-0 in doubles together at the No. 3 spot.
Franklin & Marshall will be making their season debut on Saturday against the Captains, returning five of six starters from a year ago. The Diplomats won 12 matches last season and reached the Centennial Conference Semifinals for the second straight year. Junior Nicole Russo was 12-5 at No. 1 singles last year and will headline what expects to be a strong team in 2016.
CNU will face their first NCAA Division I opponent on Sunday when Norfolk State treks across the water to face the Captains. Off to an 0-3 start against East Carolina, Mary Washington and George Washington, the Spartans are led by second-year head coach and CNU alum Worth Richardson. The team is led by sophomore Dajana Cvjetkovic playing at the top spot after earning team MVP honors last season.
