The nationally-ranked men's and women's squads will host St. Mary's College of Maryland Wednesday night at the Freeman Center. The women's game tips off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men's action at 7:30 p.m.
John Krikorian's men's squad is ranked fifth in the nation this week and has won 13 straight games. The Captains are 22-1 and 16-0 atop the CAC standings. CNU wrapped up the regular-season conference championship on February 3rd and will be the top seed next week when the CAC post-season tournament gets underway.
The Captains, who won at York on Saturday in the final road game of the regular season, were 12-0 away from home this year. They will take a 10-1 Freeman Center record into Wednesday night's game with the Seahawks, who are 12-11 overall and 8-8 in the CAC.
Sophomore Marcus Carter has taken over the squad's scoring lead for the season. Carter, from Williamsburg, was named the CAC Player of the Week on Monday after posting two double-doubles last week. He matched a career-high with 27 points at York on Saturday.
While the men have wrapped up a league title, the CNU women are in the midst of a fierce battle for position. CNU is 21-2 overall and 14-2 in the CAC, tied with Marymount atop the standings with two games to play. The Captains have won 16 straight games and control their own destiny. A win Wednesday night over St. Mary's and a home win over Marymount on Saturday would secure the top spot for
Bill Broderick's team.
The CNU women are ranked 16th and 17th in the country this week in two separate polls, and are also coming off a road win Saturday at York. St. Mary's enters play on Wednesday with an 8-15 overall mark and a 6-10 record in the CAC.
Both CNU squads won their first meeting with St. Mary's on January 20th in St. Mary's City, MD.
Wednesday Zeta Tau Alpha will be partnering with the CNU basketball teams for their annual "Pink-Out" game. They are calling the two games
Wednesday at the Freeman Center "Baskets for Breast Cancer" and urge all fans to wear pink to promote breast cancer awareness.
Christopher Newport's basketball squads have combined for an overall record of 43-3 and 30-2 in conference play this season. Neither team has lost a game since the start of the new year. CNU's best all-time combined basketball season came in 1997-98 when the squads posted a 50-7 record (the men were 26-2 and women 24-5).Â
Live webcasts of both games Wednesday will be available on CNUsports.com/live. The men's game will also be available live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 7:10 p.m.
Following Wednesday night's twin bill, the Captains will complete the 2015-2016 regular season on Saturday with a doubleheader vs. Marymount. The Senior Day women's game will start at 2:00 p.m. followed by the men's game at 4:00 p.m. at the Freeman Center.
