No. 37 CNU Women's Tennis Drops Methodist & Roanoke on Saturday in CNU Quad

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- On the first day of the CNU Quad, the 37th-ranked Christopher Newport women's tennis team handled regionally-ranked Methodist University (0-1) in a final score of 7-2, and raced past Roanoke College (0-2), by way of the shutout, 9-0. The Captains improved to 3-0 on the season with the pair of non-conference wins on Saturday, and will face Salisbury University to close out the two-day event on Sunday in their first CAC action of the year. 

In the day's first action, the Captains were facing their former confernce rivals from Fayetteville, N.C. at the Centre Court Racquet Club in Newport News. Methodist was opening their season against the Captains and were ranked 14th in the Atlantic South Regional Rankings released in the preseason. CNU came in ranked 37th nationally, hauling in a No. 7 ranking in the Atlantic South.

CNU pulled ahead 2-1 after doubles, capturing 8-3 victories at No. 1 and No. 2 in tandem play. Katie Carlson and McKinney Harwood earned the win at the top spot, dropping Isabella Graf and Sam Munze. 

In singles play, Harwood shut out Graf at No. 1 singles, winning quickly 6-0, 6-0. Carlson also earned a two-win performance against the Monarchs with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Munze. Methodist won at No. 3 singles and doubles as Jjenna Landis captured the singles victory over CNU sophomore Kate Huck, but the Captains won the final three matches in singles to pull away for a 7-2 victory. 

Against Roanoke, Christopher Newport won all three doubles matchups to carry a 3-0 lead into singles. After shuffling the lineup slightly, Director of Tennis Eric Christiansen got an impressive performance in singles play. Carlson capped a four-win day in the two matches after an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles and a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles, taking down Emily Henderson. Rookie Lily Schreiber also stepped in for her first career dual appearance and promptly responded with a victory at No. 6, handling Lydia Dey (6-0, 6-1). 

Like Carlson, three sophomores swept both singles matches they played on Saturday as Meili Konell, Claire Dockrill and Isabelle Wessel rolled to wins against both Methodist and Roanoke. 

The Captains will return to action on Sunday morning, capping their appearance in the CNU Quad against conference rival Salisbury University at 10:00 am.
