The 6th-ranked CNU men's basketball team will look to continue a 12-game winning streak while the 18th-ranked CNU women's program hopes to add to a 15-game roll.
The doubleheader will tip off at 1:00 pm with the women's teams facing off at Charles Wolf Gymnasium in the Grumbacher Center on the campus of York College. The men's teams will tangle at approximately 3:00 pm, immediately following the conclusion of the first game. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available with links found at CNUsports.com.
On the women's side, Christopher Newport has compiled the third longest winning streak in program history and looks to match the second-longest with one more victory. Carrying a 20-2 overall record with a 13-2 CAC mark, the Captains will face a challenge to remain unbeaten in 2016 as they face a strong, veteran Spartans program still vying for positioning in the CAC Tournament. The Spartans are currently in fourth place in the CAC standings with an 11-4 conference mark while posting an 17-5 overall record.
The CNU women are coming off a key win in conference play, breaking a tie for second place with Mary Washington on Wednesday night with a 59-53 win over the Eagles. With just three games remaining, the Captains have clinched at least one home game in the CAC Tournament and are fighting for a coveted first-round bye awarded to the top two teams in the final standings. Sophomore
Sam Porter has led the way of late, notching three straight double-doubles. Against the Eagles, she registered a career-high 13 rebounds in helping the Captains stave off a second-half comeback by Mary Washington.
The York (Pa.) women feature the league's leading shot-blocker, Sam Hruz, who is among the nation's elite post defenders ranking in the top 20 nationally in blocks per game. The junior also leads the team in scoring and rebounding with 11.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game.
Following the women's tilt, the CNU men will look to continue their stellar season in their final road game of the regular season, but will face a talented Spartans team looking to be the first CAC team to drop the Captains. Christopher Newport is 21-1 overall this season with an unblemished 15-0 record in conference play, while York enters Saturday's contest with a 9-13 overall record, 5-10 in league action. The Spartans are fighting for their playoff lives, needing to win out to have a chance at one of the final spots.
On Wednesday night, the Captains controlled a wire-to-wire win over Mary Washington to keep their win streak going, capturing a season sweep of the Eagles with a 79-68 victory at home. After Saturday's road trip, CNU will host the last two games of the regular season against St. Mary's (Md.) and Marymount before starting the CAC Tournament in the semifinals on Thursday, February 25.
Leading the way of late has been junior forward Tim Daly, who registered three straight 20-point performances last week. He leads the team in rebounding with 7.4 boards per game while ranking third on the squad with 12.7 points per game. Guards Marcus Carter, with 14.8, and Aaron McFarland, at 14.4, lead the team in points per game.
York features one of the league's top big men in Dalton Myers, averaging 16.3 points per game for the Spartans. Matt Scamuffo, a dangerous threat from long-range, is adding 14.3 points per game while Blayde Reich is also averaging double figures with 10.2 points per game.
The men's game will be broadcast live in the Hampton Roads area on the CNU/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM).
