About No. 10/10 CNU Women's Basketball (7-0)
The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) moved Christopher Newport up to No. 10 in the nation last week, and D3hoops.com followed suit this week as the Captains added their seventh straight win to open the season. CNU held on at No. 10 in the Coaches' Poll and have two matchups this week in the final week of action prior to the holiday break. After taking on the Bishops Wednesday night, the Captains will hit the road to face Salisbury University on Saturday, December 17, and won't play again until December 30 against Virginia Wesleyan.
The Captains have paired a stalwart defense (49.7 points allowed per game) with a high-paced offense that ranks 12th nationally in scoring at over 80 points per game (80.7 ppg). The team defense ranks fifth nationally in turnovers forced and 38th in field goal percentage defense, while the Captains have dominated the glass, ranking ninth nationally in rebounds per game with 50 per contest.
The CNU attack has been led by dominant starting front court
Sam Porter and
Jessica Daguilh, combining for 21 points and 16 rebounds per game. Daguilh has registered back-to-back double-doubles and Porter is among the nation's leaders in steals per game.
About North Carolina Wesleyan Women's Basketball (5-4)
The Battling Bishops have been tested with a pair of long road trips already this season, splitting games in Ohio at the Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot at Marietta College before splitting a pair in Georgia against Berry and Oglethorpe. The two-and-a-half hour road trip to the Freeman Center will be the shortest of the year for the Bishops, who are 2-2 away from their home gym. The Bishops opened the season with three straight wins against Mid-Atlantic Christian, Hood, and Randolph.
Junior Kechae Parker leads the squad with 15.6 points per game while adding a 7.3 rebounds per game as well. Senior Timyra Staton leads the team in rebounding, hauling in 7.7 boards per game, while also serving as one of three NC Wesleyan players averaging double figures in scoring, with 10.8 points per game. The third player in double figures is senior Alexis Fitzgerald, who is knocking down over 2.5 three-pointers per game and pouring in 11.2 points per game.
CNU and NC Wesleyan have faced off over 80 times in program history, marking the third most in CNU women's basketball history. The Captains own a 63-16 advantage in the all-time series. In the last 20 matchups, CNU is 19-1.
