NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The New Jersey Athletic Conference announced its post-season football honors Friday, and a dozen Christopher Newport student-athletes received recognition. Senior wide receiver
Taylor Loudan was named the league's Offensive Player of the Year, becoming just the third CNU player in program history to receive such an honor, and the first since the Captains became an NJAC member two years ago. Roland Hilliard (2004) and Tunde Ogun (2008) were both USA South Offensive Players of the Year.
Loudan, from Stephens City, set a new school mark for career receptions this season and became the first CNU receiver to record two 1,000-yard seasons. It's his second straight appearance on the NJAC first team.
Joining Loudan on the first team are junior quarterback
K.J. Kearney and senior tackle
Colin Moog. Kearney, from North Dinwiddie, started all ten games and led the NJAC in passing yards with 2,272. He also threw a league-high 18 touchdown passes while being intercepted only eight times. Moog, from Williamsburg, was an anchor on the offensive line at a tackle spot, starting since his sophomore season. It's his second NJAC honor after being named honorable mention last season.
Six Captains were named to the second team, including five defensive standouts. Senior lineman
Allen Hayes, senior linebacker
Drew Davidson, junior linebacker
Brennan Gary, junior lineman
Chris Coggins, and junior cornerback
Justus Drakeford were joined by senior center
Scott Fahey from the offensive unit on the second team.
A trio of Captains also received honorable mention status. Senior punter
Joe Carter, senior safety
Shomari Wright, and junior H Back
Danny Mattson all were honored for their outstanding play.
Christopher Newport concluded the season last Saturday with a 41-0 win over Southern Virginia. The Captains won their last two games to finish 7-3 on the season and 6-3 in NJAC play. CNU had its best start ever, winning the first four games this fall.
The season marked the final for Captains Head Coach
Matt Kelchner, who concluded a 16-year tenure that began with the inception of the program. Kelchner's career included ten trips to the NCAA's and a final record of 109-60 (.645).
