NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Two freshmen members of the Christopher Newport University football team were honored on Monday by the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). Defensive back Jayden Miller was named the Defensive Rookie of the Week, and wide receiver Braylon Addy was selected the league's Offensive Rookie of the Week.

Miller and Addy helped lead the Captains to a 37-7 road victory on Saturday at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, CT. The victory improved the Captains to 2-0 to start the 2026 season.

Miller, a freshman from Lynchburg, Va., made four tackles, including three solo stops in the road victory over the Wolves. The starting cornerback also forced a fumble as the Captains defense allowed just one score and held WestConn to just 227 yards for the day.

Addy, a freshman from Bristow, Va., caught two passes, both for touchdowns. The starting wide receiver caught a nine-yard scoring strike from quarterback Brandon Pena for the first touchdown of the day in the second quarter, and later hauled in a scoring pass from 27 yards out in the fourth quarter as the Captains cruised to the 30-point road victory.

Christopher Newport moved up in the rankings this week as the new polls were released on Monday. The Captains moved from 18th to 16th in the new poll from the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), and also jumped two spots from 20th to 18th in the weekly ranking from D3football.com.

Paul Crowley's squad has next weekend off before traveling to play another Landmark Conference school, Susquehanna University, on Saturday, September 26^th, in Selinsgrove, Pa. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
