NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport University junior Josh Powell was honored on Monday by the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). The Norfolk, Va., native was selected the Special Teams Player of the Week following CNU's season-opening home victory over the Newport News Apprentice School at TowneBank Stadium Saturday night.

Powell, a wide receiver and kick returner, scored the first touchdown of the year for Paul Crowley's squad with an 84-yard kickoff return in the opening quarter of the game. He registered two kickoff returns for 105 yards vs. the Builders.

The Maury High School graduate also caught three passes for 53 yards in the victory, including a 19-yard scoring strike in the third quarter of the 43-14 win.

Powell scored the first TD of the new season after accounting for the final touchdown last season when he returned a kick 96 yards for a score vs. Susquehanna in the NCAA Tournament last November. His two scores vs. Apprentice give him nine in his CNU career.

The Captains, ranked 20th this week by D3football.com and 18th by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), will travel to Danbury, Connecticut, Saturday to play the Wolves of Western Connecticut State University. Both schools won their season openers on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
