NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- On Saturday, the Capital Athletic Conference season will kick off with a highly-anticipated battle between the 2014 regular season champion Captains of Christopher Newport and the 2014 tournament champion Frostburg State University. The Captains (5-2-1) will host the Bobcats (4-5-0) at 4:30 pm on Saturday, with live video pending inclement weather and live stats available at CNUsports.com.
Last season, the Captains and Bobcats finished the season 0-0-2 against eachother with a pair of 1-1 draws. Frostburg State was the only team that CNU did not defeat in the CAC last season and the Bobcats came out on top in the CAC Semifinals with a penalty kick shootout victory. Both teams made it into the NCAA Tournament, with FSU capturing the automatic berth and CNU earning an at-large selection. Overall, CNU holds a slight 2-1-2 advantage in the all-time series.
CNU comes into Saturday's conference opener off a pair of losses against tough teams in the Chicago area, falling to then-24th ranked Wheaton (Ill.) and the University of Chicago for their first two losses of the year. The Captains started the season unbeaten through six games and still feature a strong 5-2-1 overall record. Frostburg State will take on the Captains also riding a small losing streak, falling in three straight games to drop to 4-5-0 on the season.
The Captains continue to be led by junior
Victoria Perry, who ranks third in the CAC in scoring with 13 points. She has notched six goals and one assist and has registered a pair of game-winning strikes. Senior
Lindsay Mondloch leads the team with three assists, while the rookie class has burst onto the scene featuring three of the top five leading scorers so far this season.
Both of CNU's oustanding goalkeepers feature an identical 0.96 goals against average to this point in the season, combining to allow just eight goals in over 750 minutes of play. Junior
Haley Casanova has started six games, while sophomore
Carly Maglio has two full games of action with an 85.7% save percentage.
Frostburg State graduated first team All-Conference forward Stephanie Fazenbaker, but still feature a potent offense that is averaging over two goals per game. Chelise McCoy and
Brooke Longo are each in double figures already as McCoy has a team-high 11 points, just one ahead of Longo's ten. The two have combined for nine goals and three assists while Leah Yurko and Erin Worthman have each poured in eight points as well.
The matchup is a family affair, as CNU assistant coach
Jamie Gunderson will be pit against his sister and CNU alum, Dani Gunderson, in her first year as an assistant coach with the Bobcats.
Kick-off is scheduled for 4:30 pm at Captains Field. With the forecast showing heavy rainfall expected in the Hampton Roads area, fans are encouraged to stay tuned to CNUsports.com, as well as following @CNUathletics on Twitter and Facebook for any updates.
