Box Score vs. St. Mary's (Md.)NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's tennis team used another dominating performance against the league to clinch a spot in the 2015 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament, dropping the St. Mary's (Md.) Seahawks by a final score of 9-0. CNU improved to 12-4 overall this season with a perfect 5-0 mark in league play, while the Seahawks fall to 9-4 overall and 4-1 against the CAC.
The Captains got out to a 3-0 lead after doubles, winning 8-3, 8-2 and 8-3, in order.
Alexandra Drye and
McKinney Harwood, the Captains rookie duo at No. 1, dropped Shannon Ramsey and Melissa Barall at the top line, while
Logan Eldridge returned to the court with
Katie Carlson for an 8-2 win at No. 2. Rounding out the doubles wins, freshmen
Kate Huck and
Kristi Wong dropped Katie Chase and Mollie Johnson, 8-3.
Iin singles play, CNU quickly clinched the match with straight set wins in five of the six head-to-head battles. Carlson won without giving up a single game at No. 3, dropping Lauren Rost, 6-0, 6-0. Rookie
Emily Morgan captured her second career singles win when she dispatched Chase at No. 6, by a final score of 6-0, 6-1.
The toughest matchup of the day came when Drye ended a career-opening 12-match win streak at No. 2. Barall, the Seahawks freshman sensation had not dropped a singles match all spring when Drye edged out her opponent in a third set match tiebreaker. She hit a winner off the sideline to go up 9-8 and rocketed a serve that prompted Barall to float a return long on match point. She finished out the win 6-3, 5-7, 10-8.
CNU has two conference matches left on the regular season schedule, hosting nationally-ranked Mary Washington this Saturday, April 11 at 1:00 pm, followed by a road trip to Salisbury University on April 16 at 2:00 pm.
