CNU Women's Lacrosse Travels to York (Pa.) for Regular Season Finale on Saturday at Noon

Live Stats // Video Stream

YORK, Pa. --
With playoff positioning on the line, the Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will wrap up the regular season on Saturday at noon when the Captains battle York (Pa.) in a Capital Athletic Conference match-up at Kinsley Field.

CNU enters the game with a 9-6 record, including a 5-2 mark in league action. York sits at 11-4 on the season and 6-1 against conference foes.

Although both teams have already locked up spots in the upcoming CAC playoffs, Saturday's game has major implications on seeding for the tournament. Entering the finale, Christopher Newport can finish anywhere from second to fourth in the standings. A win by the Captains and a loss by St. Mary's against Frostburg State would lock up the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye for CNU. Wins by both the Captains and Seahawks would result in a three-way tie with York and force a coin flip for the second seed.

Regardless of the outcome, Christopher Newport is guaranteed at least the No. 4 seed and a home game in the first round, which would take place on Tuesday. The semifinals are slated for next Saturday, and the championship game will be held on May 2.

For those fans unable to make it to Saturday's game, York will provide live stats and a video stream of the action at YCPSpartans.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.

Saturday's match-up will be just the second all-time meeting between the Captains and Spartans. Last year, York picked up a 15-10 victory in Newport News.

Entering the weekend, Christopher Newport is on a two-game roll, including a 20-3 triumph over Southern Virginia on Wednesday. Against the Knights, Carly Wilson and Meaghan Galvin both posted four-goal efforts, while Catie Chess notched a hat-trick. On the defensive end, Savanah Cummings registered her first career victory after stifling SVU with four saves during 50 minutes of work.

Coming into the home stretch, two Captains are on the cusp of history. Hanna Slough currently boasts 36 career victories, which is one shy of establishing a new all-time program record. Additionally, Galvin has collected 65 draw controls this year, which ranks second in the CAC. That total is also one shy of matching her career-high and seven away from breaking the single-season program mark set by Lauren King in 2013.

Along with her work on the draw, Galvin also ranks second in the league and among the top-50 nationally with 63 points. At present, she is one of only 13 players in the entire NCAA with at least 60 points and 60 draw controls. Of those standouts, only two are in either their first or second year of collegiate lacrosse.

On the defensive end, Mariah Ginebra leads CNU with 17 caused turnovers and 28 ground balls. Tess D'Arcy has pieced together an exceptional freshman season as well with 15 caused turnovers, including eight in her last six games. Kirsten Mendelsohn has also forced 15 and picked up 24 ground balls.

York enters Saturday on a four-game winning streak, including a 15-9 victory over St. Mary's on Wednesday. Against the Seahawks, Brittany Noell, Katelyn Cattrano, and Jayme Verman all scored three times, while Melissa Meehling forced three turnovers. As a team, the Spartans rank 30th nationally with a 7.67 goals-against-average. Charlotte Wright has led the way between the pipes with a .373 save percentage, while Verman boasts a team-high 44 points.
