Complete Box Score vs. George MasonFAIRFAX, Va. -- Playing their second Division I opponent of the Spring, the Christopher Newport women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 setback to George Mason University on Sunday, taking on the Patriots on their home courts. The Captains (11-4) won at No. 2 doubles and captured multiple game wins in all but two matches on Sunday, settling in nicely against the Division I squad.
The best performance of the day came at No. 2 doubles, where rookies
Alexandra Drye and
McKinney Harwood captured an 8-4 win. The CNU freshmen pairing took down Jane Awad and Esu Erdenebat to improve to 5-0 as a team on the second line this spring. The Captains would drop the doubles point, however, as George Mason won the top line, 8-4, and at No. 3, 8-5. The Captains battled in both, as
Katie Carlson and
Kate Huck suffered the loss at No. 1, while
Logan Eldridge played with
Meili Konell at No. 3.
In singles play, Harwood nearly pulled off an upset on the top line when she stretched Morgan Yang to a seventh point in the first set, but ultimately fell to the sophomore, 7-6, 6-2. Awad avenged her doubles loss by dropping Drye at No. 2 singles, and Konell was forced to retire at No. 3 because of an ankle injury, but the Captains played well in lines 4-6. Carlson won five games at four against Erdenebat, Eldridge captured six wins againist Brittany Pilkington in the No. 5 matchup and Huck won two games in each set against Olivia Lacy-Thompson.
The match wrapped up CNU's non-conference schedule for 2015 with a 7-4 mark. The Captains have just three CAC matches remaining on the regular season schedule and will host St. Mary's (Md.) in their next tilt on April 8, at 4:00 pm.
