CNU Women's Tennis Cruises to Pair of CAC Wins Over Penn State Harrisburg and York (Pa.)

Box Score vs. Penn State Harrisburg
Box Score vs. York College (Pa.)

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In two Capital Athletic Conference matches at home Saturday, the Christopher Newport women's tennis team dropped just a single match en route to their fourth and fifth straight wins. The Captains (11-3, 4-0) cruised past Penn State Harrisburg, 9-0, and handled York College (Pa.), 8-1.

First, in the morning hours of a cold, spring Saturday, Christopher Newport raced out to a 3-0 lead over the Lions (2-6, 0-2), winning all three doubles matches with just one game lost. Katie Carlson and Kate Huck captured an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles, beating Shawna Brandt and Jessy Miller, and Logan Eldridge paired with Meili Konell for a win at No. 3 by the same score, topping Fay Ansary and Aiba Diaby.

At No. 2 doubles, rookies Alexandra Drye and McKinney Harwood won, 8-1, over Steph Harnden and Hilary Mataure, giving the Captains a 3-0 lead. The dominance carried over into singles play, as CNU posted four perfect 6-0, 6-0 matches on lines 3-6. Eldridge, Huck, Isabelle Wessel and Emily Morgan posted the wins in order, as Morgan made her collegiate dual debut in fine fashion. Wessel improved to 4-0 this season, with a 2-0 mark at No. 5.

Rounding out the win against Penn State Harrisburg, Harwood defeated Miller on the top line, 6-4, 6-1, and Drye surrendered just a single game, 6-0, 6-1, in her win over Brandt at No. 2.

After the match wrapped up, CNU and York moved their tilt indoors to the Centre Court Racquet Club and aside from a loss at No. 1 singles, the Captains were nearly equally as dominant in their second match of the day.

In doubles, Drye and Harwood won 8-0 at No. 2, leading the way over Megan Jones and Emily Price. Carlson and Huck won, 8-3, at No. 1 and Eldridge and Konell collected an 8-2 win to give CNU a 3-0 lead.

Heading into singles with momentum, CNU would not disappoint. Konell was perfect in her first career win at No. 2, winning 6-0, 6-0, while Eldridge and Wessel also posted straight set flawless wins. Kristi Wong, like Morgan, made her collegiate dual debut in the No. 6 slot, and impressed with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Carter Vaughn.

The Spartans lone win came over Drye in the top spot, as Katie Wagner won 6-2, 6-3.

CNU will return to action on Sunday, facing off against NCAA Division I opponent George Mason University on the road. The Patriots and Captains will start play at 2:00 pm.
