Complete Box ScoreNEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After exactly one month of action away from the friendly confines of the CNU Courts, the Christopher Newport women's tennis team settled in like they never left by making quick work of Frostburg State (1-7, 0-3) on Sunday morning, 9-0. The Captains (9-3, 2-0) shut out the Bobcats in Capital Athletic Conference action, playing ont he outdoor courts at home for the first time in 2015.
CNU's last home match was against Norfolk State on February 22, before the team set out for a cross-country spring break trip. The team had a week off following the California trip, and returned to action this weekend, but on the road for the conference opener on Saturday. It wasn't until today, exactly a month after the setback to the Spartans, that the Captains were playing meaningful tennis on their home courts.
The young team didn't let the long layoff bother them, smashing Frostburg State to the tune of a combined score of 96-5. CNU gave up more than one game in just one match on Sunday, and had shutout wins in five of the nine total matchups.
Rookie
Meili Konell and sophomore
Logan Eldridge did not surrender a single game in their matches, including an 8-0 win together at No. 3 doubles. Konell flew past Ashley Smith at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0, and Eldridge won by the same score over Jessica McCants at No. 5.
In singles, rookie
Kate Huck also won without giving up a game at No. 6, dropping Kumba Sankoh. In doubles,
Alexandra Drye and
McKinney Harwood captured an 8-0 win over Ashley Smith and Sara Hildebrand. Kayla Kirk picked up one game in the first set against Harwood at the top line of singles, but the CNU freshman dominated the rest of the match, 6-1, 6-0.
The Captains will return to action on Saturday, March 28, as they host Penn State Harrisburg in CAC action at 10:00 am.
