ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- The Christopher Newport women's lacrosse team will continue Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Captains head to St. Mary's for a league bout at Seahawk Stadium.
CNU comes into the game with a 4-4 record, and St. Mary's enters at 5-1. The Captains are also 1-0 in CAC action, while Saturday's battle will be the Seahawks' first league game of the year.
Overall, CNU and St. Mary's have met nine times with SMC leading the all-time series, 5-4. Last year, the two squads split a pair of games. The Captains dropped the regular season tilt, 10-7, before bouncing back for a 9-8 victory in the CAC Tournament.
Christopher Newport comes into the weekend following a 14-10 setback to McDaniel on Thursday. During the game,
Catie Chess notched her fourth hat-trick of the season with three goals against the Green Terror.
Erin Callahan contributed three points as well, while
Meaghan Galvin scored twice.
Carly Wilson also added a goal and an assist, and
Hanna Slough came through with 12 saves.
Entering Saturday, the Captains rank eighth in the nation with 155 points this season. On an individual level,
Kylie Chaplin is 22nd in the NCAA with 14 assists, and Slough is 31st with 58 saves. Galvin also leads the CAC with 30 draw controls, while
Mariah Ginebra is among the league leaders with 12 caused turnovers.
Lindsay Weaver has also forced 10 miscues and added 11 points on the offensive end.
St. Mary's enters the weekend after seeing its five-game winning streak snapped with an 8-7 setback against No. 10 Washington & Lee on March 14. Tori Poffenberger has anchored the SMC attack this season as she leads the CAC with 33 points. On the defensive end, Kayla Dunn has compiled a .437 save percentage and an 11.10 goals-against-average, while Shelby Newman has 11 caused turnovers and 16 ground balls.
Following Saturday's contest, Christopher Newport will return to action on March 28 when CNU hosts Frostburg State at 1 p.m.
