CNU Women's Basketball Game NotesNEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- It's time for another postseason in the Freeman Center and the Christopher Newport women's basketball team will kick things off at 5:30 pm on Tuesday evening, facing fifth-seeded York College of Pennsylvania (11-14, 7-11) in the Capital Athletic Conference Quarterfinals. After finishing the year tied for third place with Marymount University, the Christopher Newport Captains (17-8, 13-5) are the four seed in this year's tournament, earning the right to host the first round matchup.
In the CAC, six teams qualify for the postseason tournament with the top two teams earning byes. This year, Salisbury University and Mary Washington were number one and two, respectively, while the other Quarterfinal matchup features third-seeded Marymount against sixth-seeded St. Mary's (Md.), also played Tuesday night. The winner of CNU vs. York will head to Salisbury, Md. on Thursday to take on the top-seeded Sea Gulls.
Heading into the postseason tournament, the Captains are riding a five-game winning streak and won seven of their nine conference games in the second half. Led by senior
Camry Green, who became just the third player in school history to reach 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds during the regular season finale, is averaging a team-high 12.6 points and a league-high 12.0 rebounds per game this season. Rookie
Sam Porter is second on the team in scoring and rebounding, and is up to 9.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game with five straight starts.
This season, the Captains and Spartans split the regular season decisions, with each team winning on its home floor. CNU won by 11 in the first game of 2015, with a 62-51 victory, followed by a 12-point win for York, 54-42 on January 31.
York (Pa.) has featured a strong defensive team, especially in the paint. Sophomore forward Sam Hruz leads the league in blocked shots and anchors a team that ranks in the top 25 nationally. Offensively, Hruz (10.1 ppg) and Shea Wassel (13.1 ppg) are the team leaders, while also pacing the team's rebounding.
