Logan Eldridge highlighted Sunday morning's action for the Christopher Newport women's tennis team, as the Captains faced off against NCAA Division I Norfolk State University (1-5) at Centre Court Racquet Club, falling to the Spartans, 7-2. Eldridge paired with
Alexandra Drye for a doubles win and then captured a singles win over her Division I foe in singles action as well.
CNU suffered its first dual loss of the season, falling to 4-1 overall.
The win at No. 5 singles over Norfolk State's Krystal Scott was the first over a Division I opponent in Eldridge's career. She suffered a first-set loss, 6-3, but returned the favor with a dominant 6-1 win in the second. Playing in a super-set tiebreaker, Eldridge and Scott were locked in a battle, but the CNU second-year pulled out a thrilling win, 11-9, for the Captains' lone singles victory.
Earlier in the day, Eldridge paired with Drye and the tandem remained perfect this spring by running their win streak to five. Facing Scott and Yvonne Kamegne, the Captains twosome earned an 8-6 win.
All three doubles matches were competitive, including a nice comeback attempt from
McKinney Harwood and
Kate Huck in the No. 1 doubles position, before suffering an 8-5 setback to Liza Gordeeva and Dajana Cvjetkovic. In singles action, Harwood raced out to a 4-1 lead in the first set, but Cvetkovic ran off four straight wins to take control of the momentum leading 5-4. The first set would end in a tiebreak, with the Spartan No. 1 pulling out a tight 7-6 (4) win, before going on to win 6-3 in the second.
After opening the season with five straight home matches, CNU will face its toughest road swing of the season. Over next week's Spring Break, the Captains will travel to California to play five matches in seven days, including three against nationally-ranked opponents. The cross-country trip will kick off a run of seven straight road matches for the CNU women.
