NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - It's the final week of the regular season for the Christopher Newport University men's and women's basketball teams. The Captains have two games left, and both will be played on the road. Wednesday night, the squads will head to St. Mary's City, MD., to take on the Seahawks of St. Mary's College.
The women's game will tip off at 6:00 p.m. followed by the men's action beginning at approximately 8:00 p.m. Live stats and video will be available for both games, with links found at CNUsports.com/live. The men's game will be broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 7:40 p.m.
While both CNU squads are assured of a spot in the six-team Capital Athletic Conference post-season tournaments beginning next week, this week's games will go a long way in determining seeding for the tournaments. Both CNU teams hold hopes of finishing in the top two spots, which receive quarterfinal byes and begin play at home in the semifinal round.
John Krikorian's men's squad has won three straight games, and the Captains are coming off a decisive 80-62 home victory over Marymount on Saturday. CNU never trailed, and set the tone early by hitting its first seven three-point shots of the day. Senior Mike Cherry stole the spotlight on Senior Day by pouring in 23 points, with 15 coming on five triples. Cherry is ninth on the CNU all-time scoring list, and is one of only three players in school history to connect on more than 200 career three-point field goals (216 to date).
The Captains enter the final two games of the regular season in a three-way tie for the second spot in the Capital Athletic Conference standings, even with Marymount and Salisbury at 12-4, two games behind St. Mary's (14-2).
CNU is 17-6 overall, while the Seahawks are 18-4 for the season. The Captains defeated St. Mary's at the Freeman Center on January 14
th, 66-58, and since then the Seahawks have won their last ten games, most recently an 84-67 home win over Wesley on Saturday. The victory was the 200
th for St. Mary's head coach Chris Harney, who has compiled a 200-78 record over the last ten seasons.
On the women's side,
Bill Broderick's CNU squad has also won three straight games, and the Captains are coming off two exciting come-from-behind triumphs last week. CNU stormed back to win at Mary Washington last Wednesday, and then came back again Saturday and defeated Marymount in overtime at the Freeman Center, 72-61. CNU is tied for third in the league standings heading into the final week of the regular season.
Senior
Camry Green was named the Capital Athletic Conference's Player of the Week following the two victories last week. Green continues to move up the all-time CNU statistics charts among the best in school history. She now ranks fourth all-time in career field goal percentage, and has also earned a spot in the Top 15 all-time in career scoring. With 981 rebounds, she is threatening the 1,000-rebound plateau, and would become just the third player in program history to reach 1,000 rebounds and 1,000 points in her career should she collect 19 more boards.
CNU beat St. Mary's in the first meeting of the season on January 14
th at the Freeman Center, 66-43. The Seahawks are just 7-15 overall but are 7-9 in the CAC heading into Wednesday night's battle. The Seahawks needed overtime on Saturday to beat Wesley, 63-57, in their last outing.
Both Christopher Newport squads will conclude the regular season on Saturday. The Captains travel to Middletown, Pennsylvania, to take on Penn State Harrisburg. The doubleheader will begin at 1:00 p.m. with the women's game followed by the men's game beginning at approximately 3:00 p.m.
