NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- On the first day of the CNU Quad to open the Spring season, the Christopher Newport women's tennis team raced out to a 2-0 start, shutting out Sweet Briar College, 9-0, and Roanoke College, 7-0 on Saturday. Playing at the Centre Court Racquet Club in Newport News, the Captains opened play with a perfect start, capturing a pair of wins over ODAC programs.

In the first match of the season, CNU swept Sweet Briar by surrendering just seven games combined in the nine individual matches. The Captains dominated doubles play, winning 8-0 in all three matches. At No. 1 doubles, rookies McKinney Harwood and Kate Huck dropped A.J. Lukanuski and Gina Rutledge. Sophomore Katie Carlson paired with Meili Konell to beat Anna Colvin and Samantha Yew at No. 2, while Alexandra Drye and Logan Eldridge earned a quick win over Adwoa Sika and Baylee Worth in the No. 3 slot.

The biggest win of the day came at No. 1 singles as Harwood earned her first win over a regionally-ranked opponent. The freshmen dispatched the 23rd-ranked singles player in the Atlantic South, Caitlin Delmas, by a final score of 6-1, 6-4.

In the 4-6 lines, CNU did not drop a single game, as Eldridge, Claire Dockrill and Huck earned perfect 6-0, 6-0 wins for the Captains.

The Captains would then face off against Roanoke College in the late match, and captured a win over the regionally-ranked Maroons, 7-0.  CNU raced out to a 3-0 lead after doubles, as the same three tandems took the court in the evening match. Harwood and Huck won, 8-2, over Reed Kegel and Emily Henderson at No. 1 doubles, while the No. 2 and 3 tandems did not surrender a game.

In singles play, the two teams completed just four matches before calling it with CNU clinching the win. Drye defeated Henderson in the No. 1 slot, 6-2, 6-0, and Eldridge picked up a win over Emma Barker by the same score at No. 4. Carlson and Konell were the remaining wins for CNU, picking up a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kegel at No. 2 and a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Briell Smith at No. 3, respectively.

The Captains return to action Sunday morning, rounding out the CNU Quad against former conference foes from the USA South, Methodist University. The Monarchs are ranked No. 8 in the regional poll.
