CNU Men’s Lacrosse Travels to No. 15 Washington & Lee for the 2015 Season Opener on Friday

Live Stats / Video Stream

LEXINGTON, Va. --
The Christopher Newport men's lacrosse team will kick off the 2015 season on Friday evening when the Captains take on No. 15 Washington & Lee in a non-conference battle at 6 p.m. at the W&L Turf Field.

Picked fourth in the Capital Athletic Conference Preseason Poll, CNU has high expectations entering 2015 after returning seven starters from last year's squad. The Captains will have a tough challenge in their opener as the Generals bring back nine starters and enter the year ranked second in the ODAC Preseason Poll.

For those fans unable to make it to the game, Washington & Lee will provide live stats and a video stream at GeneralsSports.com. Direct links to both features can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.

Friday's match-up will mark the fourth all-time meeting between the two programs. Washington & Lee has won the previous three games, including a 14-6 triumph in Newport News last year.

Christopher Newport is led by a strong senior class, including John Thompson, who enters the year ranked third on the program's career points list with 101. The defense is also veteran-laden and anchored by Brenden Dwyer, who is a two-time All-State selection and led the squad with 28 caused turnovers last year. Fellow senior Michael Mabry also started all 16 games last season and forced 11 miscues while collecting 15 ground balls.

Along with the fourth-year standouts, CNU welcomes back Brooks Billings, who led the team with 32 points in 2014. Joey Rolando and Randy Foster also scored 15 times apiece, while Nick Kirschke is back after ranking second in the CAC with a .578 faceoff percentage. Matt Hayden will also provide leadership between the pipes as the sophomore compiled an 8.62 goals-against-average last season while starting 15 games.

Equally experienced on both sides of the ball, Washington & Lee returns a majority of its lineup from last year when the squad recorded an 11-6 record. The team welcomes back six All-Conference selections, including first-team honoree Colin Fraser, who anchored a defensive unit which allowed just 7.75 goals per game. Cam Lewis will help supply the offensive punch after registering a team-high 60 points last season.

Following Friday's tilt, Christopher Newport will remain on the road for a 1 p.m. battle against Ferrum on February 21.
