FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's soccer team returns to action this Saturday, October 3 for Capital Athletic Conference action, traveling to the University of Mary Washington for a 1:00 pm kickoff. The Captains (5-3-1, 0-1-0) will look to shake off a three-game skid with the matchup against the Eagles, who have started the year with a 6-4 overall record, 1-0 in the conference.
The Captains raced out to a great start this season, unbeaten through their first six games before encountering a tough portion of the schedule, facing three straight opponents that reached the 2014 NCAA Tournament. The three-game losing streak included the CAC opener last weekend, falling 1-0 to Frostburg State.
Ready to right the ship, Christopher Newport will get a chance against conference rival Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon. The offense has scored at least one goal in all but one game this season and continues to be led by junior
Victoria Perry. She ranks third in the conference in points, with 13, and tied for third in goals with six. Senior
Lindsay Mondloch is also among the league leaders with three assists this season.
Defensively, sophomore
Carly Maglio and junior
Haley Casanova are atop the league statistical leaders for goals against and save percentage, providing head coach
Dan Weiler with depth at the key position. In front of the Captains GK duo is a talented back line that includes junior
Sam Rabinek, sophomores
Kira Warner,
Carly Melkus and
Danielle Pratt. In all, CNU has allowed just nine goals in as many games, including four shutouts.
The all-time series is even after seven matchups, with the teams locked in a 3-3-1 draw after a 1-0 overtime victory in favor of CNU last season. Weiler is 2-0 against the Eagles since taking the reins in 2013.
This season, the Eagles have bounced between wins and losses, with a 6-4 overall record in a road-heavy early season schedule. The young roster has been led by rookie Marisa Madaras, scoring six goals in seven games played this season. Two more freshmen, Christiana Meyers and Lauren Brower have been consistently starting and have added five goals and one assist, combined.
Three freshmen goalkeepers have seen the most time, with Haley Randall starting nine of ten games with a 1.07 GAA. She has played the bulk of the minutes, with a 77.1% save percentage in over 675 minutes of action. The defense features the most veteran presence for Mary Washington, where seniors Michelle Gibbons, Anna Brauch and junior Allie Branum have started all 10 games.
