NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport women's soccer team will play a pair this weekend, traveling to Wesley College for a Capital Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday, October 17 before returning home to host No. 4 Lynchburg College on Sunday, October 18. Both games will kick off at 6:00 pm as the Captains (9-3-1, 4-1-0) take on the Wolverines (5-6-2, 2-3-0) and Hornets (14-1-0).
The Captains will look to extend a four-game winning streak when they take on Wesley Saturday night. Then, in one of their final non-conference tilts of the season, the Captains will host the defending national champion Lynchburg Hornets with live stats and live video available at CNUsports.com/live. Last season, CNU captured a 5-0 win at Wesley to improve to 2-0 all-time against the Wolverines, while falling to Lynchburg at home, 4-0, running the all-time record against the Hornets to 3-9-2.
Saturday's contest against Wesley will feature two of the league's leading scorers as CNU junior
Victoria Perry and Wesley rookie Janiah Moore matchup for the first time. Moore ranks second in the league in total goals and points with 13 and 29, respectively, while the Captains' leader ranks third in both categories with 10 goals and 23 total points.
Offensively, Perry is the top option for CNU while junior
Allie McWilliams and senior
Lindsay Mondloch have added ten and nine points, respectively. The two midfielders have been huge in facilitating the offense, combining for 11 of CNU's 22 assists this season. In goal, sophomore
Carly Maglio has started seven games and allowed six goals for a 0.88 GAA. She has posted a 77.8% save percentage while splitting goalkeeping duties with
Haley Casanova, who owns a 0.92 GAA and 81.2% save percentage.
Wesley has leaned heavily on their rookie goal-scorer as Moore is the only Wolverine in double figures so far this season. Fellow freshman Samantha Netterman has added three goals and two assists to rank second on the team with eight points. The CAC foe has won two of their last three games, including a 2-1 overtime win at Southern Virginia.
On Sunday, the Captains will take on one of the perennial powers in the region as Dr. Todd Olsen and the Lynchburg Hornets return to Newport News for the first time since the 2009 season opener. This year, the Hornets are coming off the program's first national championship and appear to have not skipped a beat in 2015, running off 14 wins in their first 15 games. Ranked 4th nationally by the NSCAA, Lynchburg is ranked in the top ten in both total points and goals-against average as they feature a solid offensive and defensive game.
Coming off a dominating 11-0 performance against Hollins, the Hornets now feature five players in double figure scoring including a pair with 23 points this season. Senior Morgan Singer has eight goals and a team-best seven assists while sophomore Hannah Olds has registered a team-best 10 goals with three assists. Defensively, the Hornets have allowed just three goals this season as senior goalkeeper Tess Frelick owns a 0.23 GAA in nearly 1200 minutes of action.
