Camry Green, as the Captains held on for a 61-52 win in Capital Athletic Conference action against defending champion York College of Pennsylvania (4-7, 0-4). With her first bucket of the game, Green became the 26th player in program history to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau, and for good measure, registered a career-high 19 rebounds by the end of the night to put her stamp on a gritty league win Saturday afternoon.
Green's 19 rebounds were paired with 15 points, collecting her ninth double-double of the season and 37th of her career. She is the third player in the last two seasons to reach 1,000 points for her career, joining former teammates
Tia Perry and
Nicole Mitchell on the list. Green now has 1,013 career points, ranking 23rd all-time for the Captains. With the impressive performance on the boards, the Captains' lone senior moved into 8th all-time with 849 rebounds in her 91st career game.
The historic bucket was the Captains first of the game, as both CNU and York struggled from the field in the early going. The game was tied at seven six minutes into the game before Green made a highlight-reel play in the open court, picking off a pass and rushing to the basket for a coast-to-coast bucket. She was fouled and converted the free-throw to give her five of the team's first ten points.
After CNU took a slight edge, York responded with a mini-run of their own to take a game-high three-point lead with 10:18 remaining in the first half, 15-12. Katie Wagner dropped in a fast-break layup to give the Spartans the edge. The Captains took control of the half with 12 of the next 13 points, taking an eight-point advantage at 24-16, looking inside as
Kendra Stone,
Devon Byrd and Green all scored in the spurt.
Headed into the half, CNU carried a four-point advantage, 32-28, led by Green and Stone with seven points apiece. Both teams endured turnover woes that limited the damage, while CNU was shooting at a nearly-39% clip on 12-31 from the field. Neither team could get going from long range, hitting just 4-28 attempts combined.
To start the second half, the Spartans pushed back to within one, 36-35, on a three-pointer by Brianna Bisci, but the Captains managed to hold them off from taking the lead in the second half. After extending the lead back to nine, York again responded to pull back within five, 48-43, with 11:38 remaining before the Captains rookie class showed off the team's depth.
First, out of a 30-second timeout,
Makenzie Fancher made a nice move to the basket for a layup. Then,
Makeda Wright got a long rebound and raced to the right side of the paint, scooping up and in a layup that rolled around the rim before tickling the twine. On the defensive end,
Bailey Dufrene collected a big rebound and a steal on back-to-back plays.
While CNU was unable to extend the lead past 11, the defense was good enough to hold off a frenetic attack by the Spartans, thwarting any attempt at a late comeback.
Both teams controlled the ball better in the second half, while the defenses reigned on both ends. Led by six blocks from Sam Hruz, the Spartans finished with ten swatted shots in the game, and the CNU defense picked up ten steals, getting three from Green and Dufrene.
Three Captains finished in double figures, with Green's double-double leading the way. Stone added ten points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Fancher dropped in 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting.
York had a pair in double figures, as Wagner and Sarah Shearer finished with ten points apiece, and Kailee Knight led the rebounders with 14. Hruz filled the stat sheet, scoring eight points with nine rebounds, six blocks and two steals.
CNU will return to action next Saturday, January 10 as they play host to Penn State Harrisburg in league play. Tip is set for 2:00 pm.
