CNU Women's Soccer Hosts Captains Classic This Weekend

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- This weekend, the Christopher Newport University women's soccer team will play host to the 2014 Captains Classic, hosting four games on Saturday and Sunday. The Captains, receiving votes in the national rankings this week, are off to a 1-0-1 start and will take on Averett University (0-2-0) and Kean University (2-1-0) at 3:00 pm both days.

The neutral site contest will feature Virginia Wesleyan College (1-2-0) at 1:00 pm, taking on Kean Saturday and Averett Sunday.

CNU sophomore Victoria Perry has been the catalyst for the offense early, as she has scored three goals and added an assist in the first two games for CNU. Factoring into four of the five CNU goals in the opening weekend, the second-year forward has bolstered a young front line for the Captains.

Youth is everywhere for second-year head coach Dan Weiler, including sophomore central back Sam Rabinek, the 2013 CAC Rookie of the Year. In goal, sophomore Haley Casanova and rookie Carly Maglio have split the time, allowing just one goal between them for a 0.45 team goals against average.

A Captains Classic staple, the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins will be looking to shake off a two-game skid after opening the year with a victory. The Marlins dropped back-to-back games against nationally-ranked opponents in their last two contests.

Kean University is off to a solid start, with a 2-1 mark including a shutout of FDU-Florham on Wednesday night. Shelby Pedersen and Grace O'Brien each have one goal and one assist to lead the way for the Cougars.

Rounding out the tournament, and CNU's first opponent this weekend, is former conference rival Averett University. The young squad has been shut out twice early this season by Roanoke and nationally-ranked Lynchburg.

Game times are scheduled for 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm on both days. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available. Due to a football game also being held Saturday evening, fans for Saturday's contests are asked to park in Lot E3, closest to the soccer field off Prince Drew Road.
