LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Facing a defense that has surrendered just two goals all season, and an offense averaging five goals per game, the Christopher Newport women's soccer team was unable to upset the 5th-ranked Lynchburg Hornets (7-0-0) on the road Sunday afternoon, falling 4-0. The Captains overall record drops to 4-2-2 after being held off the scoreboard for just the second time this season.

The Hornets won its seventh straight game to open the season with a pair of goals in each half. Senior Dessi Dupuy scored one in each half while Jade Woll and Hannah Olds each added scores.

Rookie goalkeeper Carly Maglio posted a career-high seven saves in net for CNU, facing 11 shots on-goal. In the first half, she turned away three Hornet attacks, and she added four stops after halftime.

Offensively, the Captains managed more shots against the tight Lynchburg defense than any of their previous opponents, including a season-high six shots on-goal allowed. Six different players put shots on-frame for the Captains, with none coming closer to scoring than sophomore Sam Rabinek in the waning minutes of the match.

After a long attempt by Abby Johnson was high and wide, the Hornets surrendered possession on the ensuing goal kick and CNU earned a corner. Taking the set piece from the corner with less than two minutes to go, Lindsay Mondloch played a nice ball into the box where Rabinek headed a shot toward the net. The Lynchburg keeper was beat, but a Hornet defender saved the shot off the line and denied the shot. Off the initial save, rookie Alexis Haycraft took a second-chance shot, but this time Ashley Cox, the Lynchburg keeper, was there for the save.

The Captains will look to bounce back next Saturday, September 27, as the team kicks off defense of its regular season title with a 1:00 pm match against Wesley College.
