The Captains (3-1-2) got goals from its two scoring leaders, as
Sarah Perrett got CNU on the board first, and
Victoria Perry provided a necessary insurance goal early in the second half.
The uncomfortable conditions did not seem to bother either offense, as the two teams managed to pester both starting goalkeepers throughout the match. Roanoke keeper Carolyn Sarbacher made six saves in net for the Maroons, and CNU netminder
Haley Casanova needed to make five stops in goal for the Captains. In all, the two teams combined for 27 total shots, with the home team posting a 15-12 edge in attempts.
It wasn't until the 33rd minute that either offense could break through, when Perrett put away her fourth goal of the season. The Captains drew a corner kick that rookie
Kaylie Deshler sent into the box where the Roanoke defense and CNU attackers battled to get a head on the ball. The ball finally dribbled out past the top of the box, where Perrett stepped in and blistered a furious line drive through the crowded box and into the left side of the goal. The rocketed shot was well beyond the reach of Sarbacher for the Captains first goal of the match.
After coming out of the intermission with the 1-0 lead, the Captains looked to their sophomore scoring leader for the second tally. Just under 12 minutes into the second stanza, Perry received a pass in the middle of the field just outside the box. She took on three defenders and her keen footwork saw her split a pair of Maroons at the top of the box. Once free, she launched a shot on frame to the left corner, beyond the outstretched hands of the Roanoke keeper, giving the Captains a 2-0 advantage.
The Maroons would not crumble under the deficit, however, and cut the lead back to one in the 64th minute of action. A long pass to the right corner from Taylor Sayegh got beyond the CNU defense and the first to the ball was forward Adelyn Fitzgerald. After one touch, the Maroons rookie put just enough air under her shot from outside the box to get over Casanova's head and into the back side of the goal.
The CNU defense would lock down from that point, though, and only surrendered one more Roanoke shot-on-goal in the game. With CNU's sophomore goalkeeper up to the task, the Captains would hold on for the 2-1 victory.
Perry led the team in shots, taking five attempts with four on-goal. Marlana Barnard was the only Roanoke player with multiple shots, taking a pair with one on-frame.
The Captains will be back in action this week, taking on a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference foes on the road. First, CNU will take on Shenandoah in Winchester, Va. this Wednesday, September 17, followed by a match against nationally-ranked Lynchburg College on Sunday, September 21.
